Summary: Written for fanfic100 prompt #089 - work. Dean reflects on how hunting has affected them.
Dean thought back over how time had changed the people that he loved. John had gone from being a drill instructor to disappearing. He popped up every now and then, but he didn't seem the same. The demon had taken so much from him. Time had taken even more. John wasn't a young anymore. He didn't heal as quickly as he used to. He was as sharp as he had ever been, he had so much knowledge of what they hunted. His reflexes were getting to slow to do some hunts safely. Still, he continued to chase the demon that killed his beloved Mary. He just had to.
Sammy had gone from the happy kid to a touchy teenager. He'd hunted and decided that college was better suited for him. There was nothing Dean could do but let him go. He wanted Sam to be happy, so he left him to his new life until he needed him to help look for Dad. When Dean saw Sam at college, he saw some of the old Sammy there, and it struck Dean how much of a hole Sam had left in his life. They had fallen back into the familiar rhythm of hunting and Dean felt energized once again. Then, Jess had been killed and Dean had seen Sam broken. He had taken care of Sam as best he could. Sam's hurts were easier when they could be treated with band aids. Emotional hurts weren't Dean's strongpoint. Dean fell back into waking Sam from nightmares.
Sam had bounced back for the most part. He started to smile more but he still had those quiet times when Dean knew he was thinking about Jess. Dean had learned to leave him be when he got like that. If Sam spoke about Jess, Dean was more than willing to listen, even if he didn't know the words to make the pain go away. Dean had never loved someone like Sam had loved Jess. He had no point of reference. All he could do was handle his little brother with care as he worked his way through it.
Dean supposed that he had changed, too. His main focus had been protecting Sam for as long as he could remember. He learned to hunt at an early age and hunting was all he'd ever wanted to do. College had never crossed his mind. He'd been hurt when Sam had told him that he was going away to college. He was proud of Sam's scholarship, extremely proud. it's just the distance that hurt Dean so bad.
After Sam left for college, they didn't have a home anymore. Dean and his dad lived on the road. They hunted and moved on. Dean was used to the job, it was just that Sam was missing. Dean felt so lost after his dad didn't come back from a hunt. He didn't know where else to go besides to Sam.
They still hunted. They had new physical and emotional scars, but they were still the Winchesters.
