Summary: Written for fanfic100 prompt #001-beginnings. Sam thinks about his early memories.
When Sam thinks back to the beginning, his very first memory, it is about Dean. Dean being there to protect and take care of him. Sam had awaken to a dark, unfamiliar room after a nightmare. He called out, only once, before he heard Dean's comforting voice. When he felt his bed sink and Dean lying beside him, putting his arms around him, he knew he was safe. Sam still didn't know where he was because they moved around so much, but he knew he was with Dean and that made it all okay.
His first memories of his Dad include seeing him smile and the worn-out leather jacket that he used to wear. When his dad would come to check on him, after he'd already been asleep for a couple hours, he'd pull the covers up over Sam and tell him, "Goodnight, Son," in his low, rumbly voice that sometimes had a certain smell to it that Sam just associated with his dad. Later on he would learn that the smell was alcohol. But, that didn't lessen the comfort that the memory gave him.
"You sure are quiet," Dean said from the driver's seat.
Sam's mind had drifted off, and it tended to do during long road trips. "Just lost in my thoughts," he replied.
"That doesn't sound like someplace I'd like to go," Dean laughed.
"Didn't think you would," Sam smiled, knowing that Dean preferred the here and now.
The hum of the tires lulls Sam back into where his memories took him. He used to sleep curled up by Dean, getting comfort from his presence when he had the ache of what he felt he was missing or fear of the unknown. There are no known cures for the empty ache for something you have never had, like a mother's arms to turn to, but part of you still misses it. Dean's presence brought some relief when nothing else could. Even now, he couldn't think of anything that could provide that kind of comfort.
