mutation Waverly has large white wings, and a generally angelic appearance. She has some level of super strength, hollow bones, and her wings are very flexible, able to become almost invisible under the right clothing. She also possesses other avian traits, such as sharper hearing and sight. national security threat level moderately high
skills/talents Waverly is a smart businesswoman, and good at making friends. She also speaks French fluently. personality To all appearances, Waverly is a sweet, caring young woman, who wants desperately to be liked and friends with everyone. But this is just a cover, disguising the bored, disgusted interior. She sees herself as being the only person who really understands the world from all levels, and though she keeps it under wraps most of the time, her arrogance becomes apparent quite often. She can't tolerate loud noises, or wearing clothing for long if it covers her wings. At the same time, she hates the ‘angelic’ appearance they give her, feeling as though that is a form of blasphemy.
Despite all of her bitterness and hatred, Waverly does have a few joys. She loves to go to the opera and theater, and even enjoys taking people with her sometimes, though with the understanding that nothing will happen beyond coffee and lunch. She also reads magazines and newspapers voraciously, and sometimes she criticizes the writers, but on the rare times when she feels the author did a good job, she’ll cut out the article and keep it. Even her acquired hatred can’t diminish her love of beauty in a wide variety of forms.
Though she is well past a teenager’s body issues, she still never feels comfortable in her own skin, unless she’s flying. That is the only time that Waverly is ever really at peace, no matter how serene her external expression is. Often she feels as though she wasn’t made for this world, as though she were an alien, almost, from a more peaceful, less crowded world.
immediate family Kathryn Worthington and Warren Worthington Jr. (parents, estranged) history Waverly is an only child, due to difficulties in her birth. For the fist few years of her life Waverly knew no want. She had everything she could possibly desire, loving parents, new toys, many friends. . .her life was idyllic, and she became quite spoiled as a result. She knew that her life would always be wonderful, and that she would succeed in everything she tried. The part that would make things harder for her in the long run was that everyone around her knew it as well. No child had ever been as sheltered and loved as Waverly.
Until she was about ten. That's when her wings started to grow in. No doctor could explain it, and as the wings grew, Waverly's body shifted as well. She lost all of her body fat, including her barely developed breasts, and her face took on a sharper, somewhat hawkish appearance. It wasn't until she was through puberty that her figure softened even a bit, and even after that, her form was so androgynous, she found that she was more comfortable going out dressed as a man than a woman.
Horrified by all these changes, her parents took her to doctor after doctor, searching for a cure. Waverly began to resent her parents. They wouldn't accept that she had simply been born this way when one doctor suggested it, and her father began wondering if Waverly was even his child. The feeling of rejection only grew worse as the two adults began fighting, and threatened to divorce each other, Warren for what he was sure was proof of his wife's infidelity, and Kathryn who was tired of her husband's increasingly abusive nature. Unable to take the stress at home, Waverly left, figuring she would be fine out in the world.
She was wrong. Within a week she was back with her parents, much to their collective distaste. But even life in this high stress environment was better than the life she'd had on the streets. The search for a way out never ceased, and Waverly jumped at the chance to live in a boarding school. She excelled at school, and seemed to make friends easily, without letting anyone get too close. She graduated with flying colors (pun not intended), and was quickly accepted into a prestigious college that her parents had been donating to for years.
Her college years were very solitary, and she dropped most pretense of making friends, preferring to spend time by herself, reading and learning. Her grades were even better in college, and she joined the newspaper, just to see what it was like. Surprisingly, Waverly enjoyed working for the paper, her pride at seeing her words being read by others (even if they were under and assumed name). These were the happiest years of her life. She had frequent practice flying, due to the frequent fogs and rain storms that are part of the weather of New England. It felt as though she was truly free, and she had a purpose, and a goal. Waverly changed majors midstream, turning from business to journalism. With her powers, she was able to observe things easily, her super sight and hearing to eaves drop, while being high enough not to be see.
After college Waverly was a bit lost. She searched for jobs with newspapers, magazines, and everywhere else, submitting articles like mad. But nothing seemed to work out for her, ever. She worked her ass off, desperate to scratch out a living for herself. Eventually, she discovered that her parents were doing their best to prevent Waverly from working, claiming that they had information that proved she was lying, in fear that she would someday tell the world who, and what, she was. This pissed Waverly off so badly she didn't even know what to do. So she packed her things, sold what she couldn't carry easily, and went to Europe.
In France she hooked up with an aspiring photographer who had a lot of talent. They began working in tandem, and eventually both were able to secure jobs together at a small town newspaper, with the intention of moving up. For a while things were once again good, and Waverly slowly became attached to Cameron Sutherland. They dated for a while, and it seemed as though Cameron really understood her. She found herself falling in love with the man, and planned to tell him what she was, hoping that he would be able to understand.
She never found out. The night she intended to show him her wings, there a disturbance down the street from their favorite bistro, where they were dining. While she looked on, a man with some kind of device that emitted a loud buzzing sound scanned the crowd. It didn't seem like a big deal, until she realized that the buzzing got louder and more urgent when he pointed it at her. The man realized it as well, and smiled, pulling out a gun. He shouted something about saving humanity and fired. Waverly dodged, but needn't have bothered. The man was not a very good shot, and hit Cameron instead. He died instantly, strewn over the table where they had been eating moments before.
Angry and scared, Waverly shed her coat, showing the world her oddity for the first time. The man fired again, and a fleeing bystander was hit. She raced forward, her wings adding size to her body that the gunman couldn't accommodate for. She grabbed him, breaking the arm with the gun, and took off, flying him high above the streets. It seemed as though her whole world was made of this fury. She rose higher and higher in the sky, and the man screamed in terror and flailed. She hadn't flown with another person before, and it threw her off, making her flight erratic. She struggled to hold onto him, but at exactly the wrong moment, a high wind blew, and knocked her so off course that she lost her grip, and the man plummeted to his death.
It was after this incident that she was approached by a member of the Sisterhood of Mutants, after being spotted fleeing the scene of the crime. She was talked into joining to avoid jailtime, and has been laying low with the Sisterhood since then.
