"Don't be ridiculous. You don't have to be near your subject; you only need to isolate that person's frequency. It's work a watcher can do from the comfort of an office chair. You know of course that signals from the brain may be measured, even charted. There are electrical waves, devices to read them, people who study these things. Different states have been identified, cataloged, analyzed. What our people figured out is that one brain may be entrained to another, 'tuned in,' so to speak. The result is a kind of sensory transduction. Not so different, really, from listening to the radio. That's my metaphor, at least. Those who practice dream detection describe it as a kind of shadowing, only they tail their suspect through his own unconscious mind rather than through the city. If they are after some specific piece of information, they may even influence the dreamer in subtle ways, nudging him toward the evidence they need."We can refine and reshape different aspects of the AU to suit our taste, whittling down what works and what doesn't in terms of mechanics and how that could or would have changed the characters' background and personal worldview. The world could be a very different place by virtue of these small changes. I'd love for a handful of us to form a group PSL using alternate versions of their canon counterparts. Seeing as Cobb's tends to be the most difficult shoes to fill, I would be happy to try my hand at him in order to get this started. There's a custom set up in this journal with a duplicate of this post, so just toss up a note of interest if you'd like to be in on this and we can have everyone's ideas in one place. As for original characters, if it ever comes to that: why not? But it'd be ideal to get the canon cast together first.
