Cloud could hardly believe it.
The six year old had been sitting on the Water Tower in the center of town, watching the brilliant stars in the night sky, swinging his legs absently as he thought about what happened earlier that day- another day of being bullied and scorned by his fellow villagers.
He tilted his head back to let his view encompass the entire sky, even as sadness filled him; were they never going to accept him?
A sudden streaking flash caught his eye, and he gasped as another meteor lit up the calm night sky.
Watching with eager eyes, Cloud saw as one by one meteors flashed as they hit the planet's atmosphere- about a dozen or so in all. A few minutes passed since the last flare, and Cloud sat back with a sigh, a little disappointed that the light show was over.
Suddenly, a brilliant supernova flare brightened the night sky before a large meteor came careening down from space, and Cloud watched in awe as the meteor crashed several miles from the town with a muffled boom.
Not caring about what could happen, the small child quickly climbed down from the tower's scaffolding, and picking up the small bag he'd had with him- one his mother insisted he carry at all times- he quickly ran out of the town toward the site of the crash. His thoughts rang with the promise of adventure.
By the time he reached where the meteor had fallen, he was panting and out of breath- all thoughts of the monsters lurking in the mountains gone from his mind... which is why the Nibel Wolf had so easily snuck up on him.
It was a scrawny thing, one that was more hunger than sense, so starving that it could not discern that which the healthier monsters could. It could not understand the foreign energy in the air, the electric tang that sent all the monsters running. So caught up was it in its cornered prey, it did not notice until too late the hulking form that lumbered up behind it.
Cloud had noticed.
The little boy watched with sublime fear and awe as the looming figure came from between two large pine trees, watched as it assessed the situation before it, and- with a sense of overwhelming unease- watched as the figure reached out with one enormous metallic limb, plucking the boy from where he'd been cornered by the predator just as the Wolf looked like it was going to move in for the kill.
He shook as he was cupped in one large hand, the sensation of movement making him queasy, but he kept quiet as the figure walked further and further away from the thwarted Wolf, towards, Cloud noticed as he peeked through the giant's finger, his hometown. His breath came in large pants and he tried to keep the one holding him from noticing, his fear almost overwhelming.
What was the strange being going to do?
His imagination flared with worse case scenarios, his child's over-active imagination picturing brutal destruction; the thoughts only made his fear worse, and he bit back a sob as tears welled in his eyes.
Unexpectedly, they stopped and Cloud found himself gently lowered to the forest floor.
"You should go home, little one," the gargantuan figure said, speaking for the first time in a deep voice. Cloud gasped, looking up with wide eyes and backing up a few steps. "Go on," the strange being urged, settling back to watch the young blond.
Cloud bit his lip before making up his mind, he quickly turned toward the village and was just about to run off when he paused, looking back the other in uncertainty. He hunched his shoulders for a moment, debating whether his last second thought was wise.
Looking the other in the eyes- craning his neck to do so, even if the other was crouching- the little boy said, "My name is Cloud. My mother says to thank people who help you so... thank you for saving me." He blushed by the end, looking down at the ground in embarrassment.
"A pleasure to meet you, young Cloud," the figure replied before offering, "My name is Optimus Prime."
The boy offered a shy smile to the Autobot Leader before turning and running back home.
Giant robots!
Cloud could hardly believe it.
