Tick. Tick. Tick
Ruth focused in on the sound attempting to feel grounded. The sound though small was substantial, real. More real than the crisp old pages under her hands. When she had come here everything felt different. Unsure, partial, and incomplete. Armed with only a name, and some advice to come look in the archive she arrived.
Was it wise? Probably not. Did she really want to know any more than she did? What happened after? Not really. Though this nagging feeling of needing to know the details. Could she wait for Eddie to find his scroll? No.
Though as she stood over the documented words she felt regret. She felt herself slipping away into thoughts and memories. The words stuck in her head Woodsbridge Officials found the body of Peggy Conner in the woods after Robert Conner returned home. It made it so real and brought a flood of feelings towards her that she felt like she was taken away and was no longer tangible.
Robert Conner made Vera Lord lead him to the body of Peggy Conner. Robert Conner murdered Vera Lord at the sight of the grave and was taken into custody, where he then served time in prison.
That snapshot of life after her death was all she knew. Feelings of pain that her loved one suffered. Knowing that he returned to her was crushing. The feeling of love was so strong with the memories in the scroll. Knowing he had to come back to that. It was too much. She should have waited till Eddie knew, but she couldn’t take that back now.
Who knew you could do so much damage with just a name.
The ticking clock on the wall pulled her back to reality. Grounded her in the present. Made her aware of the passage of time. The life did indeed go on. She had her own life to lead, even if she sometimes didn’t know where to start.
