There were cracks in the window panes. Thread after iridescent thread frayed in the midnight sun that peppered the ground, peppered the altar. Needle fingers, seamstress eyes. One after another the weaver inspected her lights until she found it. This one was in his belly. This one was in her chest. She pulled it from the rafters and kissed its end, curled it around her fingers and tugged upon it. How strong this tether was! How strong his heartbeat hummed in her fingers. The night breathed through her skeleton and she could feel her skin quake. Her violin spine reverberated in her soprano worship and she flipped her mirrors to face the crack that would lead her heart to Warwick, that would drag her servant from his tower. "I need you," she whispered to her messenger crow as she set him incandescent into the night. "Don't make me wait too long." For every light there is a shadow, in every shadow there lives light. And oh how shaded she felt. "Alois--" She flickered like candlelight, burning low. "Faster, now." |
