Midnight Snack
Characters: Ash, open (or dice)
When: very late Saturday night
Location: snack kitchen
Warnings/Rating: None anticipated
Summary: Ash gets together a snack while Richard naps
Status: Open, ongoing

Ash was probably still more pleased than she should have been by Richard's recent appearance on the train. Though really, it wasn't just the fact he was here so much as it was ... well, the rest of it. She'd also gotten around to introducing herself to Simon after her adventure in China with Kaylee, and while the train would never be her boat, there weren't too many complaints she could lodge.

Well, she could do without the plants, but as she'd heard some people saying, it could be worse. She'd had a couple of path-crossings with a few of them, but she hadn't gotten anything worse than a grassy wig.

Leaving Richard to nap -- well, sleep, really -- Ashley had made her way through the train to try to burn off some of her energy. She wasn't even sure how she had so much of it, but ... she did. She'd also happened to notice, on her way, that her name and Richard's were on the door of their room. She guessed that made it official as far as the train was concerned, and that suited her just fine.

Rifling through the cabinets, Ash stretched up on her tip-toes to peer into the top-most one above the counter. Spying a jar of peanut butter, she grinned and pulled it down before she continued to rummage through the rest of the middle kitchen to see what was worth putting together for a snack.

A good deal of Sirius's time here had been spent in his room, trying to come to terms with the dark and terrible things that were in his mind. Unfortunately, they were also real things. Things that had happened, things that would happen...and all of them bad. Or at least, it felt that way.

But in time, even feeling sorry for himself in the moody darkness of his room had gotten old, and he'd started venturing out. Mostly at night, so he'd meet as few people as possible - he still wasn't in the mood to be incredibly social - but he was starting to explore the place nonetheless. Starting to learn his way around, get to know people. Jaimie had wanted lessons on becoming an animagus, and he'd agreed to give those to her. Just another thing to get his mind off of the past and future that were so weighing on him.

Making his way into the snack kitchen, he started when he saw that the room was not - as it always had been at this hour - empty. Instead, there was a girl there going through the cupboards. He guessed he shouldn't be surprised. With the number of people on the train, there was almost certain to be more than one person hungry at a time. Shrugging, he forced a grin.

"If there's any marshmallow fluff in there, fluffernutters are one of my favorites."

Ash glanced over at the voice, her brows lifting. "Marshmallow fluff," she echoed, her accent apparently mid-Western or something like it. "No idea what that is," she replied as she turned her eyes back to the cabinet, stretching up a little higher. "I see jellies an' jams, some different kinds of peanut butter, but nothin' that says marshmallow or fluff on it." She glanced over to him before she gestured in a 'you want to look' sort of way. Maybe it was there and she was somehow missing it.

Or maybe it lived in another cabinet.

She didn't recognize him, but that wasn't saying much. While she was friendly enough, and spent plenty of time outside her room, she knew not everyone did. And now with Richard here, and their new-found relationship ... well, she doubted she'd be out as much in the coming weeks while they explored things. "I'm Ash," she introduced herself. "Are you new or just one of them that hides out in their room all day?" She did smile to assure him there was absolutely nothing wrong with that if that was the way he went.

"Eh, there probably isn't any. I'll have to see if I can get my hands on some at our next stop. Best. Sandwiches. Ever."

He grinned darkly, leaning against the wall as he watched her.

"Oh, I'm one of those hiding away. Getting bored with that now, though. Figured I'd venture forth and share my brilliance with others."

She nodded slightly, and wondered if there was some reason he hadn't returned the introduction. It was her usual way of getting someone to cough up their name -- to give hers first. "So what's your name?" She prompted, figuring if subtle didn't work, direct would have to. She liked knowing the names of the people she was engaged in conversations with.

"Your brilliance, huh?" She regarded him. "An' what makes you so brilliant that you figure we should all share in it?" She wondered if there was some reason he was one of those that hid out, and figured it wasn't her business if that was the case.

Rolling her shoulders, Ash unscrewed the cap from the jar of peanut butter and fished a dull knife out of the drawer to set about making some sandwiches. "You want one?" She asked. As long as she was making them, what was adding one or two to the stack?

"Sirius Black, at your service" he grinned, with an exaggerated bow. "And my brilliance is legendary. Just ask anyone from my world."

The bravado was a bit forced, but it always had been, really. He'd gotten to the point where it had been nearly second nature - to the point where he had even believed it - but it had always been to cover up something much darker inside of him. Now, he was simply hiding behind it, trying to use it as a way to block out the memories of Azkaban, and the nearly equally unpleasant revelations about his future.

"Sure, why not. I can always eat."

"I'll be sure t'do that," Ash replied, an amused expression crossing her face. "You'd have to direct me to a couple of 'em, though. I haven't worked out a system of accurately guessin' which world people're from."

She grinned, but she wasn't surprised by his response. She had yet to meet a guy who'd turn down free food. Even if, technically, all the food here was free.

"So how long've you been on this thing?" She asked with a glance over to him. While they'd ascertained he was a hider, she hadn't gotten a how-long. While they chatted, she set about marathon-making a half-dozen sandwiches. She figured whatever they didn't want between them could keep in the fridge.

"I haven't been here very long. A few days? A few weeks? It's all kind of been blending together. I had some...stuff from home to work through, and learned some things when I got here that I'd have been happy never to know, so kinda just keeping my own company since then."

He shrugged, leaning on the counter a little, watching her make the sandwiches.

"What about you? You been here long? Do you like it here?"

It was certainly better than where he came from - he couldn't even come close to denying that. But that didn't mean he was happy...or that he thought he even could be happy again, after all the things he'd seen, and all the things he knew were still to come.

Ashley shrugged. “Couple months, maybe,” she guesstimated. “It was blurry at first, then …” she shrugged. “I dunno. Not much of a point t’keepin’ track of time since it’s all arbitrary anyway. It ain’t no day or date here, not really, and one day’s the same as the next, mostly. Guess I could count sunrises and sunsets, s’long as we’re in a place that has ‘em.” While she was a little curious at the story behind his words, she wasn’t generally the prying sort. If he wanted to share, she’d listen. otherwise, she was content to let it go.

“Like it a little better now that someone from my crew’s shown up,” she admitted, an almost coy smile on her lips. “But it ain’t my boat, an’ never will be, so as long as that’s a fact, I won’t ever be really happy here.” She didn’t like the idea of being kidnapped, and she liked less the idea of being confined to the ground -- or close enough.

Stacking the sandwiches on the plates, she cut them diagonally into triangles before offering him one of the plates.

Sirius was actually quite glad to have a conversation that didn't revolve around him. Which was, actually odd for him, but somehow comforting. There was too much of what had happened, too much of what he'd learned that he still had to figure out himself.

"Your crew? Your boat? I'm guessing you're not talking about a boat on the water, here? A space boat, maybe?"

It was an insane thought, but hey, this was an insane place.

Taking one of the sandwiches, he raised an eyebrow at her, waiting for a confirmation of the craziness.

Ashley grinned. “Kestral class. In the same idea as a …” She trailed off. “Well, me droppin’ names ain’t gonna mean nothin’ t’you. It’s a big transport ship. Guess you could liken it to a cargo boat, on th’water.

“But that’s the sort I mean. Space ship. There’s a few here already from my world. Doctor Tam an’ Miss Frye. They’re both off Serenity, an’ she’s another transport ship. The class under mine.” She laughed. “Mine. Fletcher’s really. We’re just lucky ‘nough to tag along with him.” Though talking about Fletcher made her miss Fletcher, and while she was more than thrilled to have Richard … she did miss the rest of her crew.

Ash dropped her gaze briefly to the plate of sandwiches, but she guessed they’d keep and Richard probably wouldn’t starve to death in the meantime.

"Yeah, my world's got a lot of crazy stuff, but space ships and UFO's...not so much."

He shrugged.

"But I always kinda figured there was something up there, you know? There almost has to be. The universe is a big place, and if we've got magic...well, I guess I've just seen too many strange things not to believe that pretty much anything's possible. Sorry you're separated from your ship. Guess you enjoy that?"

"From what I hear, plenty of the worlds we got people from here have crazy things in 'em. We just happen t'be from the far distant future of some world or another like one of 'em. Maybe your world will have space ships eventually," she teased him with a little wink.

"We've bounced around a few ships in our time, me'n Richard. Fletch's just ... feels like home. So it's where we've been the past few years. I miss it, an' a train ain't a ship, so it won't ever be somethin' I'll acclimate to. Not unless it decides to lay track through space," she amended -- but even then, she wasn't sure it would be the same.
