Characters: Peeta Mellark & Dean Winchester
When: Thursday evening
Location: Parlor car
Warnings/Rating: Drinking, maybe some cursing.
Summary: Peeta comes out of hibernation and resorts to drinking. Unsurprisingly, it doesn't turn out well. Dean probably won't be pleased.

He'd been watching the storm since it was nothing more than a dark grey presence on the horizon. Peeta didn't know how much time had passed until it finally caught up to the train in the form of heavy sheets of rain, frequent claps of thunder and flashes of lightening. It reminded him of home, for some reason. A particular day, even. Still, he couldn't put his finger on exactly what memory he was trying to reach. It seemed so distant from him now, like the world he'd been forced to leave behind.

Keeping to himself the past couple of days helped him regain some peace of mind. The people he met so far were mostly nice to him and understanding of his doubts, but it was still unnerving that no one questioned the intentions or identity of whoever was in charge of the train. At the same time, knowing Katniss was on-board and he still hadn't seen her left him constantly on edge.

Yet Peeta knew that he couldn't lock himself in his room forever. He came out every now and then for food and, this particular afternoon, desperately sought something to alleviate the panic that had risen in his chest the moment he turned on his device and found something written by Cato, the tribute he'd seen Katniss kill the first time they were in the games.

How could he be alive?

Knowing very well no one could help him answer that question, Peeta scrambled out of his room to the nearby parlor car and poured himself a full glass of something he grabbed from the bar. He didn't care what it was or tasted like (he wasn't much of a drinker in the first place), but downed it like water. The alcohol kicked in as he sat alone at a table watching the storm. It wasn't until he felt the need for a refill that he stood on legs that were now even more unreliable than usual. As he turned, he walked straight into a person that was taller than him and smelled like leather.

"Maybe be more careful where you're going?" Peeta remarked without even looking at who he was talking to, shaking his head as he continued on his way to the bar.

“Don’t take it. I don’t really care.” And this was exactly why he usually kept to himself. Not only was this boy rude, but now he decided to push him? It was clear that this person was drunk and not having a good night, but that didn’t mean they needed to be an asshole towards him. Dean could shove him back if he wanted to, but he was going to be the bigger man and not do anything. He didn’t come into this car looking for a fight. All he wanted to do was walk through and get back to Jaz. “One. That’s all you get.” One freebee. Next time the kid might get knocked to the ground for being such a prick.

So much for regret. This stranger's failure to respond to his shove was almost taken as an insult by Peeta. Was it possible he was looking for a fight like this? It didn't seem like him at all, but then how could he know? Once he thought he was so sure of one thing, something that was suddenly and so cruelly disproved. He couldn't be sure of who he really was, but he knew that, in this moment, he wasn't willing to be sensible.

"Wow. And thank you. Thank you so much for that one," Peeta responded with a slight, mocking bow before he headed back to the bar to refill his glass as he'd first intended. "You have no idea what you're in for," he mumbled with his back to the man, chuckling a bit as he sipped at his drink. "Believing you're making friends on this train."

"Great, just what my day needed," Dean said under his breath as the drunk guy headed back to his drink. "You keep acting that way and that bottle's the only friend you're likely to have! But, as I'm a nice guy, and don't mind the odd taste of liquor, you got yourself five minutes to tell me your problems." He glanced at his watch, so it was clear he meant it. Dean headed over to the bar and poured himself a drink, and topped the glass up of his drunken pal. "Pretend like I'm the barman or something, if that'll get you to share, but get on with it cause I need to be somewhere.”

Peeta scoffed at the stranger's words. "You think you're doing me a favor, huh? Interesting." He chuckled before taking another large gulp from his glass. It happened to be too much, especially since he wasn't used to drinking and, when he did, usually never had more than one glass at a time. Peeta winced, coughing from the stinging sensation in his throat. He intended to keep to himself even as this guy offered to listen in on his problems. That was until he made the gesture of pouring him some more of that liquid courage.

"This... girl I know..." Peeta started, chuckling again before he continued, because here he was confiding in a complete stranger (and also because of the alcohol in his system). "She made me think she cared about me, but really she wants to kill me." Peeta glanced over at the man, curious to see his reaction.
