Characters: Dora, Iridia, Magius
When: pre-breakfast hours
Location: front dining car
Warnings/Rating: None anticipated
Summary: Dora ponders
Status: Complete

Dora was still trying to find an ideal routine, but she thought she was close with the one she had now. She'd moved to a room with no names on the door, and in the event someone did show up in that room, she'd simply relocate. It appeared her spot had been occupied, anyway, and she was somewhat amused when she thought about that.

Still not inclined to be around larger crowds with Iridia (though she thought she wouldn't have the same issues if her dæmon had been smaller), she'd taken to rising early enough to beat most of the breakfast crowd. This morning, she thought the red-head who'd stolen her room must be running late, because she was fairly certain it was close to the time she was usually in the kitchen.

No matter though.

Settled contently at one of the tables in the corner, she was quietly eating her breakfast of cereal and juice. Iridia was stretched out between her chair and the wall. While he was visible to anyone walking through in either direction, he wasn't exactly a prominent feature. It did amuse her a little to wonder how long it would take people to notice him if they did venture over, and what their reaction would be. She was playing a little with people, honestly, when they pointed him out. She couldn't help it at this point.

But she was explaining him as well to those interested in asking. It had gone ... well enough the first few times, so why not keep it up?

Scrolling somewhat lazily through the network, Dora let her mind drift to the rumors she'd caught wind of about the potential of wasps with venom that caused hallucinations. She was no stranger to getting her own poisons, and she'd milked snakes before. She was curious if there was a way to extract the poison from the wasps. While she had no intention of using it on the train, she thought it could be something fun to play with if she was allowed to bring it home.

She supposed she'd see, if the opportunity arose. She'd certainly do her best to ensure said opportunity arose. With a soft smile on her lips, Dora set her phone aside to finish up her breakfast before she simply relaxed. She'd move, sooner or later, when the crowds started filing in. Until then though ... she was content to sit, ponder, and watch the sand roll by.

"Greetings, Sirrah Iridia, and Lady Isadora." His bow was full and respectful, and his smile was wondering.

Magius nodded, not surprised to learn he had erred. He seemed to do it a lot on this train of otherworlders. But the word, daemon, here, was obviously different from his world's demon. He rubbed his chin, curiously. "May I join you, and learn more of your connection?" He looked to both the daemon and the woman, not sure if there was an equality, or not, but that no harm could be done in doing so.

Dora gestured for him to have a seat, and she knew Iridia would watch himself so he wasn't touched by accident. She did wonder how long it would take her visitor to realize he'd failed to introduce himself, but rather than prompt him, she'd just ... wait and see. Perhaps there was some custom of his world she was missing in the exchange of names.

She was accustomed to introducing herself and then her dæmon, and having the same returned. He didn't have a dæmon, of course, and sometimes she worried about the effect all of this was having on Iridia. He had no one to interact with. There were no other dæmon around for him to communicate with. Just her.

Which made her wonder how long it would be before he began to engage in conversations with people, and if that was going to fundamentally change them somehow. "What would you like to know?" She inquired as her eyes fixed on his, studying his features.

Magius settled, setting down his plate, and taking his place carefully. He nodded to both of them, and to her, and smiled a little. As he let go of his st6aff, it stayed upright, settling as if on a flat end.

"How is it you are together?" He glanced between the two of them. "What is a daemon, please?" He realized, then, when glancing to the two, he had not introduced himself, and he shook his head.

He let out an exasperated sigh. "Forgive my manner, I pray thee, milady, sir. I am Magius the White, wizard of the white robe order, originating on the planet Krynn. I find this place disorients me, and I am losing my proper ways." he made a bow to them seated, hands swept to the sides.

Isadora let him finish, a slight smile on her lips when he did introduce himself. "A pleasure to meet you. I'm from a version of Oxford, England," she replied. "Though no one anyone here is familiar with." That had quickly become clear enough.

"Iridia came into existence when I was born," she replied. "In my world, every person has a dæmon. It is a manifestation of their self, their soul, that takes an animal form and exists as its own entity, but tied to the person. The bond is metaphysical and emotional. He and I cannot be more than a few yards apart without it causing both of us pain."

She was getting a little better at hitting the major points of her dæmon on the first go, but she thought she'd see which questions he asked, and go from there.

"I fear I have yet to hear of your homeland a well. What differences did you note in lands?" Curiosity was something he would often deny, but it was there.

"Hmmm, then not entirely unlike a familiar. For a wizard, a familiar is called, a part of nature that is bonded with, soul to soul, mind to mind, body to body, the link flowing through the weave of magic that binds the universe. Most familiars can also not be far away, save those specially prepared to act as scouts." His eyes almost glowed with interest, and he stroked his chin.

"Do you share a level of intellect, and of interest in similar things?" He glanced at them both, though she was the only one talking. As yet, he saw no reason to exclude the other.

"It isn't the land so much as ... the way we've evolved," she replied. "No one else seems to have dæmon. No one's even really heard of the concept," she continued. She glanced toward the window. "Though as far as I can tell, our Egypts are the same."

Her brows elevated slightly before she shook her head slightly. "Perhaps there is a similarity, but ... I assume a familiar is born biologically?" Perhaps she was wrong, but if she wasn't ... "Iridia is a part of me. Without him, I don't exist. Without me, he does not exist." She studied the scenery a moment longer. "Witches' dæmon can travel away from them, after they've undergone a ritual, but ... that is the exception rather than the rule."

Isadora let her eyes drop to what she could see of Iridia. "We do," she decided. "Though we have our share of disagreements as well."

"Ah, strange but intriguing, and comforting, I am sure, to somehow share such." Magius thought, listening to her, of a more mystical bond. He was awoken from such thoughts by her question. "Some are, some are not, but yes, I see, now that this is different.'

Magius stroked his chin, then peered at Iridia. "Do you speak, then, as well, or is your bond with your other strong enough to allow the mindspeach to her, and to her alone?"

Iridia blinked at Magius as he was addressed. It was unusual, but what here wasn't? "Generally, humans do not address dæmon other than their own," he replied. It did feel weird though, and a little shudder shook him.

Dora sucked in her cheeks slightly, equally amused and disturbed. "Our dæmon speak to us," she said quietly. "It's ... generally considered a bit rude to speak to another person's dæmon, unless you are intimately involved with the person. But ... he hasn't had anyone to talk to.

"We can also communicate ... telepathically," she replied, which she supposed was the mindspeech he'd mentioned. She did wonder if the not-born familiars were like dæmon. And then she wondered if it was because at one point, someone from her world had crossed to his and somehow dæmon existed occasionally there as well.

"I apologize." Magius switched his gaze back to Isadora, his cheeks heating. "I did not intend to imply... I am sorry." he had not intended to imply that! He smiled ruefully, thinking that, yet again, he had so much to learn.

"Ah, yes. Intriguing." He reached out to hold the staff at his side, causing the crystal to glow softly as he thought. "I never took a familiar. I found I did not possess... the mind to do so." He had always been driven to explore knowledge and magic directly. He was not sure, now, seeing them together, that he had made the right choice.

"It's all right," she said. "You had no way of knowing," she pointed out. It was more or less harmless; it wasn't as though he'd tried to touch the panther, after all. Eventually, she was sure Iridia would be engaging in his own conversations.

Her eyes drifted to his staff when it started to glow. That was interesting, and she wondered what that was all about. "What about your mind made you an inadequate candidate?" She inquired as she drew her eyes away from the crystal. She assumed, perhaps incorrectly, he was like the magic users on board. She knew some used wands, so why not a staff?

"My thanks." Magius kept his eyes on her, firmly. he would not make that mistake again.

"At the time I made the decision, I had spoken to and seen only those who had given much to their familiars, and seemed lessened therein. In my youth, seeking knowledge and power were more important than knowledge by itself, and thus to me, having a mind that sought more meant not being able to support and connect with such a being." He paused and nibbled his lip quietly.

"It is possible I erred. Seeing the relationship you share with this one, though it is different from a familiar and wizard bond, likely, it makes me think such could be useful, intriguing, and even welcome."

Magius had been alone most of his life. Would a familiar be something and someone who would share his path? Now he pondered it, and wondered if he would wish to change his mind. he was not dead, and wizards could live millennia if they wished. A companion, and soul mate such as that would be someone who never parted.

"Is there only one point in your life you can make this decision?" She asked quietly. It was possible, she thought. She thought -- though couldn't confirm -- that witches has to perform the ritual of separation before their dæmon settled. So perhaps in his world, a person could only opt to take a familiar prior to a certain point or event.

"I haven't known anything else," Dora admitted. "Iridia has been with me since I was an infant. I couldn't imagine a life without him." She smiled a little as she felt her dæmon nudge her leg under the table. "But he is all of those things."

He was useful, keeping an eye out when she had to be focused on something. He was comforting. He was her stability when things were rough.

"No, though..." Magius paused, ordering his thoughts. "When a wizard is young, before he has completely attained the third level of mastery, and completed that level, he is more unbound, more able to freely disperse his magic, for it is not bound into forms and orders, nor into the ways of magics more subtle and strong. It is easier at such a time to call and make a familiar."

Magius sat back, and let go of the staff, and it stood once more unsupported as he looked inward, before nodding to her again, eyes bright. "Nonetheless, it is entirely possible to do the ritual at any time, should the wizard have the will to do so."

His lips quirked, and nodded. "Thank you." Switching tracks, he smiled. "How are you finding this strange train and your life here?"

She nodded. While she didn't understand the specifics, the idea of it was easy enough to grasp. "It's good then, that the door isn't completely closed in case you do change your mind when we get home."

Ah, yes. She was new enough still that she imagined there would be a time in which they were rescued, or returned home. She saw no reason she wouldn't some day be set back exactly where she'd been before the train had taken her.

"Not to my liking," she replied. "It's disturbing, seeing so many people in one area without dæmon. At home, unless a person is a witch or a shaman, they have their dæmon with them." Though she supposed the prophecy child's dæmon could roam now as well since she'd crossed through the land of the dead, but ... Isadora had no reason to cross paths with Lyra.

"But there's nothing to be done about it, and I'm finding things with which to occupy myself, so what more can I ask for?" she replied, her brows elevating. "And you? How are you finding it?"

Magius nodded, curious now, wondering now, if he could, indeed, summon or create a familiar of himself. Out of the magic of the universes around them. Hmmm. He shook his head, focusing on her again.

"You are an intriguing woman." She was, indeed.

Magius nodded slowly, listening, wondering at such. So having a daemon was so a part of her life and that of those around her that the absences of such made her feel so... disturbed? He felt a surge of sorrow for that, then. It might be likely that someone of her world would come here, but the train seemed to enjoy a wide swath of worlds.

"That is good! This place is full of intriguing ideas and new things to learn of and about. I find myself filled with a desire to learn. I have found one fellow similar, from a different world and situation, but who, like me, shares my desire for knowledge. Already we have spent hours speaking so."

He smiled at her. "Will you tell me sommat of your world? What you enjoyed about it?"

Something like a smirk briefly crossed her lips when he called her intriguing. She wasn't inclined to argue it, but neither would he know the half of it.

Dora hadn't found anything she was particularly interested in pursuing as far as educational advancement went, though she was somewhat curious what he had found. "That's fortunate," she agreed to his enthusiasm regarding his pursuits.

"I'd answer your questions, but I imagine I enjoyed the same things in my world others enjoyed in theirs. My hobbies. My intellectual pursuits. The days I spent alive."

Magius saw that brief smirk and it made him smile, though he looked down while he did it. Women were complicated, and made him feel horribly shy when doing anything but speaking about magic to them.

"Thank you. Ah." Her answers made him nod. "I have not, in truth, spoken to many yet... what hobbies? what intellectual pursuits?" All of this was curious to him, as layering around magic.

Beneath the table, Iridia shifted slightly, the tip of his tail twitching a little. Never the social sort to begin with, Dora found the questions to be a little on the prying side. Why was he so curious?

Perhaps it was simply paranoia, but Isadora found she disliked the line of questioning.

"I studied alethiometers," she replied. It was pretty much the same answer she'd given Finnick the other day, and why not? Let it be her primary front. "In my world, their devices much like a compass, though rather than directions they have symbols. You ask it a question by manipulating the trio of hands to the appropriate symbols, and with enough focus, it will respond. The answers are always truthful, and it allows us to be aware of events happening on the other side of the world.

"I'm not particularly adept at reading it, but to truly read it well, it takes a lifetime of study."

Magius nodded, and smiled a little. "Thank you. You have been most kind. If I may ever aid thee, please let me know." He bowed to her, then rose.

"I should be going." An edgy person of times, Magius was still learning to be around people. Curiosity pushed him to learn more, but a thread of fear and worry pushed him to flee, and he swallowed as he stepped back. He turned to go with a wave, reclaiming his staff as he did so.

Dora's brows elevated slightly, and she wondered if it was something she'd said that had driven him off. Or if Iridia had done something. "Well, that was ... interesting."

"You're getting better at your lie," he murmured to her as he made his way out from beneath the table, arching his back and stretching.

"It's not a lie," she countered, lingering at the table long enough to give Magius time to have fled the area before she rose slowly. "It's a bastardized version of the truth."

Iridia chuckled softly before he padded along after Dora, presuming they were heading back to their room.
