Miguel was not one for sitting around on his ass at the best of times, but now that there was some weird fatal treasure-hunt going on, he felt like he couldn't stay still at all. He wanted to be climbing the trees and exploring the forest, getting Lyla to scan things for people and creating maps for everyone. He was an asshole, yes, as Gabri was very fond of pointing out, and self-centered too, thanks Ma, but he didn't ever want anyone to shocking die, especially if he could do something to help. Making maps seemed easy, and spider-powers in a jungle could only ever help, right?
But the jungle was weird. The jungle seemed to have a mind of its own, so they were skirting the jungle. They headed east in the morning, towards the rising sun (and wasn't that fucking with his eyes if he looked straight ahead? Yes. Yes, it was.) and walking for hours, doing their best to stay out of sight of any of the other teams in case they were forced to fight or something ridiculous like that. The heat and humidity were awful, and the magic water-bottle was a godsend, really, even with his enhanced endurance. It was only after walking for maybe eight hours that he spotted something in the distance.
The sun was still pretty much overhead at that point, so he could look east and not hurt his eyes when he zoomed in as best he could. The vaguest hint of buildings, peeking over the horizon, and smoke trailing up into the sky. If anyone else had binoculars, they'd see the same thing, and possibly feel the same need to pick up the speed so they could get to the new village that little bit quicker. But as they approached, it was becoming more and more obvious that something was very wrong.
