Discussion: Roman's past and present collide
There's been a lot going on in Roman Wild's life lately, so much so that I think Show's leaving a lot of latitude for us to fill in the blanks again. Which, YAY!
One of the things that really intrigues me is how Roman's lies about his past are shaping his current actions. Think about it: this is someone whose very best friends in the world had no idea who he really was. He'd gotten to be such an expert at dissembling and deflecting that no one even suspected that he had fabricated his entire backstory. It's complete reinvention on a scale befitting an undercover spy, someone who has to take those risks. For Roman to feel like he had to do that too, that's huge. Overlay that with deep self-esteem issues (thanks, Dad!) and the feeling of "they wouldn't like me if they really knew me" and you've already got a yummy psych profile to dredge through.
But then the truth comes crashing down. Everybody learns about the family -- and more importantly, about the lies. Apparently there are no consequences - everyone just shrugs their shoulders and goes on. We have to assume there's more conversation between him and Deniz, that's been implied if not explicit, but basically Roman's life doesn't change (apart from becoming the caretaker of a brattish teen).
So I'm really interested in the overlay of these two plots. What do you think that kind of fabricated past does to someone? Do you think it's influencing him beyond the obvious "Marc understands things that Deniz doesn't"? Do you think its discovery has given him a reckless approach, a "fuck it" approach to things, since these people didn't know him anyway? Do you think that getting away with these lies for so many years could make him bold about getting away with more? Or do you think it could tend to send him in the other direction, and do you think it could make him more appreciative of the people who stick by him?
(I don't see how to discuss this without spoilers, so warning, there will probably be some in the comments. If people pick up this discussion. Pls pick up this discussion, I'm feeling chatty tonight. And will cry if nobody wants to talk.)
