Dearest Escapade Attendees:
Many of you have kept up with all the comings and goings of modern technology.
Many of us have not, and desperately need friendly fannish folks who are willing to share their knowledge in exchange for fannish comaraderie and maybe the pimping of fandoms at the same time.
The Plan: we will open the Escapade Genius Lounge for a few hours each day, and stock it with super rewards like secret cookies and sodas.
You would staff it whenever you decide you’d like to volunteer a little time. Just email Ellie Graves at: elgraves@cox.net today so she can fill you in on some details, and you can let her know what you know well enough to share about: ebook technology, twitter, tumbler, journals, blogs, pinboard, delicious, whatever replaced delicious, and/or other fun stuff that dramatically increases your fannish pleasure. Ellie will be sure to get you additional badges with your special skills emblazoned upon them, and you’ll be able to wear those badges while you’re geniusing for the con. We already have a few volunteers, so you will not be alone.
The Location: the swap meet room (the “Santa Rosa”, one of the function rooms adjacent to all the others) would be made available a few hours a day for Geniuses and the People who Need Them. Geniuses would, after reviewing panels and other activities they want to attend, commit to a couple of hours of hanging out with other techie friends and being willing to help the ignorant among us get a little more current on the web. You would, hopefully, receive the immense gratification of helping other fans get into the 21st century (and captive audiences to whom to pimp your fandoms, and cookies, and soda).
The Results: Hopefully the Genius Lounge will be a big hit, you’ll meet lots of people you might not have otherwise met, they’ll totally appreciate your contribution to their mad technical skilz, and you’ll get to pimp your fandoms. If it works well, we will repeat the event at future cons.
Please consider hanging out for a little while on Friday and Saturday, and being available for other fans to come and ask you questions. You’ll be in the thick of things, and it should really be very easy and mellow.
Note: You will NOT need to schedule specific times until you’ve had a chance to review the panel schedule, which is due out Friday, February 15. But we’d appreciate you emailing Ellie soonest just so she’ll know how many people might be willing to share and hang out.
Thanks, Charlotte (and Megan and Ellie and all the people who would love this kind of hands-on help)
