[home sweet home] returning to your world ; meme

You wake up in your bed, maybe. Somewhere. Somewhere you know.

Familiar scents fill your nose, the scents of home. You get up and look around and you come to a stunning, breath-taking (and sickening?) realization. You're home again. Somehow, just now, you were whisked away from that strange place you were, for however long you lived there, with how many people you came to know, and plunked down in your home, your own world. The bubble popped and now you're left wondering... was that even real? Could it have been?

What do you do now?

The phone's ringing. Maybe you should answer that.

How To Play
- Comment to the thread with your character. It will be their "world" they've returned to.
- Other people comment to them, reconnecting or awakening next to them in that home world.
- The where, when, setting & that sort of thing are up to you!
- Freak out, panic, try to figure what to do next.

Bonus:
- Work in a time difference, Lake House style!
- Is something off about this home world? Is it even really yours?

It's me. [Reassuring, or so he hopes. The nickname he was so disapproving of back in prison is oddly comforting, enough so for him to try and smooth out the conversation.]

Hey, it's only fair. You were the one sending cryptic e-mails - and then you kept me waiting!

Tell Garcia I'm sorry sometime. I had to... use her network to dig up a few things. [She laughs again, shifting around to check that nobody's watching or listening in but grinning still.]

And sorry for keeping you in suspense. I wasn't even sure if I had the zones right. Even though I checked it like six times. I'm probably keeping you from your work and everything.

I'm sure she won't mind much. [If she remembers. He didn't have the courage to bring it up earlier and even now the prospect is equally exciting and terrifying.]

You'd have a hard time finding a slot where you won't keep me from work, to be honest. Good timing though, we haven't been called out anywhere yet. [Pause. Thinking about phrasing.] So... time zones, huh?

Big difference. [Her tone falters a bit, because it's disappointing to be so many hours ahead and miles away. It's kind of ridiculous too, she really has no time at all to be fantasizing about what it would be like to meet up with a man in another continent with all the work she should be wrapped up in. But for the duration of this phone call she's going to let herself indulge in the thought. Marina had her put aside all her Assassin duties for so long that coming back to them so abruptly almost feels burdening. Which is another ridiculous thing.

She clears her throat.]
I've got about fifteen more minutes worth of call time, just a head's up. I shouldn't even be doing this, but... I wanted to know if I'd just gone crazy or not. And to talk to you if I hadn't.

[He suspected as much, really. And still there's a sting of disappointment at hearing that she's impossibly far away. So far away that their paths most definitely won't cross in the near future - no ten minute meetings over coffee at an airport - but all that is easily drowned in the sheer relief of hearing her voice. That won't go away for a while.]

I'm glad... that you called, I mean. I was wondering the same thing myself. It's a relief to know it wasn't just one big delusion.

It's not something you can really explain to anyone. [She snorts again, though sounds slightly disappointed herself.] Especially since, to everyone here, I've always been here.

Do you think... everyone? [What about the people who had no homes to go back to, or worlds where their lives were undoubtedly about to end?]

[That... is a very depressing thought. Very depressing. He's not really up for an elaborate response, because that would mean...]

You're the first I've heard from. I'm not sure if that means anything, but... it could be worth looking up other names. Just in case.

Guess I'll have to be my darling little self and dig up what I can.

[She hums for a second, thinking.] Hey, listen... I - [She falters, falling silent mid sentence at the echo of a very faint sound. She almost starts talking again, assuring herself it wasn't anything-- the call's on a good rebound and shouldn't be noted by any Templars yet. But then it occurs to her, they're not the only ones who might find it interesting to see what she's chatting about.]

See if I ever buy car parts from you again, buddy. I'll be checking online again later, but if you don't lower your prices? I can't even talk to you.

[And she hangs up, heart beating fast. Sorry, Reid.]

[He smiles at her words, but then there's that sudden stop and long bout of silence and you really don't have to be a genius profiler to know what's going on here. He tenses some, listening intently to the silence and easily takes note of the implied later in her message.

Okay. So much for those 15 minutes, but at least he knows he's not crazy. Maybe. Nothing much to do but to wait, and so he slides his phone back into his pocket. Returns to his desk, though he has no idea how he's even going to pretend to do actual work with that conversation still buzzing in his head.]

[She wants to send him another email right then, but she can't shake the weird feeling and so instead just packs up. It gets put off, more than once, until it's no longer put off and instead just not done. No internet access, too many restrictions, too many eyes, questions, things to do, too much work. She gets swept away back into her world of Assassins, artifacts and trouble for months.

And now looking back on it, she is glad she never contacted him again. Even if it wasn't easy, she didn't like the thought of somehow implicating him-- bringing attention to random FBI agent in the States. She could actually smack herself, in retrospect, for calling him once. At least before things eased up in vague ways because her canon is on going and I have no idea what's going to happen but for the sake of this meme we're saying, wow, it eased up! She's got time on her hands.

It's the third day her car's been parked out front of his place, a beat up red sports car low to the ground with some fantastic choices in bumper stickers. Some might consider this scoping the place out, true true, but she was... nervous. Now that she was in DC, plausibly about to meet up (unexpectedly, since she never sent those follow up emails) with Reid, she was just... hesitant. But today's the day.

She'll just be waiting for him on his door step, hoodie up and sunglasses on, tapping a few pieces of his mail against her knee. Nothing suspicious here. Just be happy she didn't let herself into your place. Which, by the way, if you don't show up soon she's totally going to do. Because she's hot.

[For the first few weeks, he can't get it out of his head. He's anxious, waiting for her to take up contact again and for a while he checks his emails with much more frequency than normal. Luckily the confused glances and playful jabs about girlfriends from his team mates keep him from letting it interfer too much with his work, and soon enough he doesn't think about it at all.

Maybe he should've noticed the car parked outside his apartment building, but there is no such thing as actual constant vigilance and even for a seasoned profiler it's easy to miss out on things when you don't know you're supposed to pay attention. And so he's perfectly unprepared for what he's about to bump into once he reaches his floor.

Regardless of previous suspicions, it's never a good thing to have a stranger waiting outside your door and he freezes instantaneously upon spotting her, instinctively reaching for the gun he's not carrying. It's easy to see killers in every omniously waiting stranger and the way she's covered herself up isn't exactly helping - but then he spots something familiar, her posture or body structure or maybe just her fashion sense, something that flicks a switch of hesitant recognition in his brain.]

Rebecca..? [Disbelief.]

[She hops to her feet, scooping the glasses off the bridge of her nose to wink as she tilts her chin up. Still call her paranoid with the glasses, but you never know, especially being a stranger to the city.] Hey. Sorry if I uh, scared you there.

But I got your mail though? [One lock picked, maybe. Be happy it wasn't your door's. She catches her tongue between her teeth a little nervous. Giving him a grace period to react before she'll throw her arms around him in a bear hug.]

[Hearing her voice on the phone was one thing. Seeing her right here, living and breathing and very much real... that leaves less room for doubt, and for a beat or two he's staring at her like a deer caught in the headlights.

And then he relaxes. Just a tad, a tick, enough to release the breath he's been holding ever since he spotted her. ]

You're really here.

[And here comes the hug, whether you like it or not, after she skips forward a few steps and tugs her hood down. Arms around his neck, she squeezes him tightly-- thinking the same thing herself.] Took longer than I expected to get here.

[She leans back, stepping down from tip toe.] Hi.

[The first thought that pops into his head is that she smells differently from Marina, but it passes quickly and he doesn't waste any time before reciprocating the hug, arms wrapped tightly around her shoulders and for the first time since he woke up with one hell of a migraine and three weeks worth of memories of a place he'd never been to, he can actually relax. Shove the notion that he's gone crazy out the window. ]

Hey. [Smiling. So much of it.] Do you want to... come in?

[The invasion of privacy back in Sector 2 echoes here too. Feel proud, Rebecca, he normally doesn't invite anyone at all.]

Nah, I'll just stand out here. [Of course she wants to come in, though she's hesitant to let go of him. Finally prying herself back she can't seem to lose her smile.]

I would've brought dinner or something with me, but I wasn't sure when you'd be back.

[Letting go seems like a dangerous thing to do, but unless they want to stand out in the corridor for the rest of forever it's a necessary danger. He'll be sticking close to her though, just in case. ]

We could go grab something if you want, there's plenty of good places in the neighborhood. My treat. [Naturally.]

There's a good Indian restaurant not far from here... a little out of the way, but very good.

Or if the former expatriate would prefer a diner and doesn't mind a bit of a drive, I might know a place.
