Matty had always liked running. It distracted him from everything else and cleared his head. He'd never been any good at sports like other kids growing up, even after he started going to Hogwarts, and found his interest was nothing more than a willfulness to cheer on his friends from the stands. But running was different; it was just you, your path, your pace. You didn't have to rely on anyone, could go where you wanted, as fast as you wanted. No strings attached. It also helped clear his head and make him focus on his heart-rate instead of anything else when he was upset. Like today, for instance. He'd been putting it off all week, but it'd been there in the back of his mind. Not even thinking about Gilly, though she certainly gave him a reason to smile and instantly made the world a better place, had completely distracted him.
Two years since his parents had died. It seemed like forever ago and yesterday at the same time. Matty was feeling jittery, and unable to sit still. He couldn't handle being quiet right now, he needed movement, to do something, anything but sit in his dorm staring at the cupcake statuettes on his bedside table or the family picture he kept in the drawer. He'd stayed up half the night, staring at the pictures and noting that the cupcakes still smelled a bit like the bakery, and he- he couldn't do that to himself. "Those ghosts will eat you alive, Matthew." his Aunt had told him.
He started by the Quidditch pitch, went towards the forest, and then turned in a huge circle until he reached the lake. He ran along the water's edge for a bit. He decided to go back the way he came, ran his entire path backwards, and returned to do some laps around the Quidditch pitch.
"Those ghosts will eat you alive, Matthew."
At some point, Matty ended up sitting on the ground, face in his hands, breath half a second away from breaking open in fresh sobs.
His mom would have known exactly what to do right now.
