Who: Open to All
When: Friday Night
Where: The Venial Sin
What: Party for the New mayor
Ratings/Warnings: Low (tba)

It hardly mattered that the Venial Sin had been rented out for the party, as it was packed. Though the ‘quality’ of that night’s clientele was not exactly the typical for an establishment that was so bent on maintaining a more posh atmosphere. Every citizen of Gehenna had been invited and that meant trainers, hoodies, shorts and every other kind of article of clothing that would have given the proprietor a heart attack. The city council were clearly doing their best to generate a little good will, opening up the ‘snootiest’ bar in Gehenna to the general public, of course the first drink being on their coin didn’t hurt either.

Maybe people were far more interested in that free drink and taking in the fancy surroundings than they were meeting the archangel of the hour, who happened to be just as indifferent. But the bar was packed and the city representatives who didn’t spend their time trying to disappear into the rich décor were already marking it down as a win.

Eventually the new, possibly temporary, mayor couldn’t ignore the calls for a speech and was half pushed toward the small stage not far from the bar. It may have earned a glare from the oldest of the archangels, but he did make a show of adjusting his green jacket and clearing his throat before addressing the crowd.

“I am aware that you all expect a few words. Promises for the future or an outline of my plans. Perhaps even some false sense of humility while trying to hide how pleased I am to be pressed into a position of governing. Instead, I will give you something novel for Gehenna, namely honesty: I am utterly horrified to not only find myself here but also by the thought that I might be in some sense responsible for the lot of you. I will say plainly that you are all damned regardless of how you may try to change your miserable lives. You are all detestable but unfortunately you cannot be left to sort yourselves out and would do unspeakable things to one another given the chance. That being the case, I reluctantly accept this position that I did not pursue, nor desire, for the sake of keeping some semblance of order.” He paused a moment, smiling to himself when he saw the horrified expressions of the few BAA members in the crowd. “But, so we do not start off on the wrong foot, feel free to charge the rest of the night’s drinks to the City of Gehenna. Good evening.”

Michael bowed his head then stepped down from the stage, quickly retreating to what he hoped was a quiet corner.

"Sorry I asked" she replied with raised eyebrows. She didn't sound overly offended at least. She just readjusted her bag on her shoulder and glanced over in the direction of who Bucky was talking about.

"And yes, I did hear what he said" she added. "Probably why I kind of agree with you" she added with a dazzling smile. "I think maybe we should take up that offer of a free drink. You're welcome to join me if you like?" she offered, hoping her friendly mannerisms and speech would help somewhat. And if not? Well she could always find someone else to share a drink with. It wasn't as if she liked their situation any more than anyone else. She didn't believe they were damned, nor did she believe that anything supernatural or spiritual was involved either. It wasn't purgatory, it had to be something else. She was convinced.

"Sure." Bucky gestured toward the bar with his metal hand, eyes on the rest of the bar for a brief moment. Old habits died hard, and scouting out a place was more than just a habit. They'd trained it into him, pushed it on him at every last moment, made sure that the Soldier never entered a place without knowing everything there was to know. Every last person, ever last position. He knew how to take out the entire bar, but he didn't move to do it, because HYDRA was gone, and he was... just Bucky again.

With a metal arm, sure, but just Bucky.

He gestured for a bartender, watching one nod and indicate with a finger he'd be over in a minute. "I'm Bucky, by the way." He nodded towards the man he'd just indicated he wanted to punch. "And wanting to punch him aside... I'm kind of over being a weapon these days."

Jadzia glanced back at Michael again. She was curious to meet him properly but she wasn't in much of a rush. She wondered just how relieved he would be if someone else took the job from him. How much he'd grow to like the role he had been given.

"So let's share and drink and ignore him then" she replied with a casual shrug of her shoulders. "I'm Jadzia Dax" she added. "We spoke on the network. It's good to meet you in person" she added, glancing at the different bottles behind the bar.

"So what sort of think to you like to drink then? Something strong? Sweet? Bitter?" she asked. She knew she was going to have to try and remember to use older terminology, especially given that Gehenna looked a bit like Earth in the 2000's. Until she knew she had no chance of disturbing any timelines, she was going to be careful.

"Doesn't really matter," Bucky said. He sat down on one of the bar stools, one he was sure had a seat beside it for Miss Dax. She was tall like he was, and he realized only after sitting down that they were matched eye-to-eye. Not that this bothered him; tall women were kind of a turn-on in their own way. Bucky wasn't looking specifically to be turned on, but he wasn't going to ignore specific giant signs of appeal.

He turned to look at her spots, and his brain supplied that they were unusual, but nothing to be immediately concerned about. His brain noticed things most people didn't, and his common sense told him that it generally wasn't his business any way you sliced it. "I can't get drunk. So I drink whatever. Rotgut usually works best. Nobody cares how much you drink, plus it's cheap. No point wasting the good stuff on somebody who won't make good use of it."

Bucky lifted a hand for the bartender again, frowning as he pointedly ignored Bucky and went off to serve someone else. He shrugged the metal shoulder and turned back. "What about you, Miss Dax? You get drunk?"

"Well, in that case..." she said, turning to look behind the bar. Maybe there was something from home? It was worth asking.

When the bartender approached, Dax gave him her most approachable smile and asked, "I was wondering, do you have any Klingon Blood wine?"

The bartender paused and looked behind him before walking over to a shelf and taking a metal looking bottle and bring it over to her. He reached behind the bar and took out two brassy looking cups and placed those down on the bar. Jadzia smiled and pointed in the direction of Michael.
"That's on him. Thank you" she said. The bartender nodded and walked away.

"Now this is the stuff you have to try. If you find it difficult to get drunk this should hit the spot" she said, picking up the bottle and taking the top off to pour two healthy measures into the cups. She placed the bottle back down, picked up both cups and offered Bucky one.

Klingon blood wine? Bucky'd never heard of it, but until he'd wound up in Wakanda, he'd had no idea what the hell vibranium was, either. Or, rather, he knew Steve's shield was vibranium, but not that more of the metal existed. He shrugged and took the offered cup. "It's not that I 'can't' get drunk," he said, frowning down into the liquid. "It's more that getting drunk requires me to be able to become intoxicated."

He downed the cup, pausing to make a face at the taste. It was different, all right. "My body processes toxins too quickly for the drunk effect to last more than about ten seconds. I mean. If it's a lot of toxin—I'm talking literal horse doses here—it might keep me out for about half an hour."

He wrinkled his nose. "That's some wine, though."

Jadzia watched Bucky knock back the wine, and impressed look on her face. She wasn't used to seeing people hand Klingon booze so well, so easily! But if he was telling the truth about his body processed things like that, well it would sort of make sense. That was interesting to Jadzia. She imagined it would be far more interesting to Julian though.

"I try not to drink it too often. It's definitely a drink for sharing and I figured, what better time than now?" she said with a shrug, taking a drink from her own cup. "Feel free to top up your glass if you want more?" Jadzia offered. They had the bottle and she certainly wasn't going to drink it all. A glass or two maybe. That would do the trick. She didn't have to worry about Klingons pouring more wine for her when she wasn't yet done with what she had.

"So, do you know anyone else here or are you on your own too?" she asked.

"Fortunately," Bucky said, reaching for the bottle to re-fill his glass. "Fortunately, I am the only one that I've seen so far. None of my friends are here, which means they either aren't dead yet, or, more appropriately, they managed to make it into Heaven or Hell already."

He set the bottle down between them, frowning at the liquid in his cup. "I'm hoping it was Heaven, but there's no telling. Most of them didn't really have religion, but I always kinda thought..." He dropped off, metal flingers clicking against the glass. "Well. It doesn't matter what I thought."

He turned on something like a smile, or something close enough that that's what it should look like to her. "What about you? The lone ranger? Or do you have friends from home?"

Jadzia wasn't so sure about that. She wasn't dead, she was sure of that much, nor was the symbiont inside her. No one was dead, and there was no such thing as heaven or hell... She wasn't really in the mood for an argument so instead, she chose to just observe. She was never one to just dismiss something entirely without evidence.

"No. At least I haven't been able to find anyone I know so far" she replied after taking a drink of wine. She placed the cup back down on the bar and licked her lips to get the droplets that had remained there. "So I suppose I'm the lone ranger?" she asked with a smirk and a shrug of her shoulders. "Don't get me wrong, I would be glad to find someone I knew here but I wouldn't wish being here on any of them" she added.

He spun the cup in his left hand, watching the fingers sort it out almost before his brain did. Almost, because though it was robotic, it didn't act on its own. Or Shuri hadn't told him it did, anyway, so...

"I don't mind being the only," he said. Bucky picked his cup up and drank from it, frowning down at it. "I was the only for a good chunk of time. Solitude doesn't bother me." No, what bothered Bucky was existing in this place that he'd only thought of sparingly since HYDRA took him. What bothered him was the idea that any of the HYDRA officers, any of his friends, anyone he knew could wind up here.

He played with his cup again, rotating it around the tabletop between his hands. "I guess I miss home, but... I'm not entirely surprised to be where we are."

Jadzia took another drink while she listened to Bucky talk. He was a well built man. Maybe a warrior? Soldier? A fighter of some sorts for sure... And handsome at that.

"Why are you not surprised?" she asked. The Dax symbiont had lived several lifetimes and didn't exactly hold back. Dax was typically straight forward, especially thanks to previous influences. There was no point in tip-toeing around things, was there?

"Actually, you don't have to answer that" she said after a brief pause. "It's not something I'm trying to put too much thought into, honestly. The thing I don't understand is how we got here. We all seem to be from different timelines, different cultures and backgrounds. A lot about this place doesn't make much sense to me" she said pausing. "I'm a scientist. I like to question things" she said with a soft smile, before draining her glass and reaching for the bottle to top it up.

"I've noticed that." Bucky gestured towards the bar itself, using his flesh hand to do it. "But see, this is part and parcel with my upbringing. I went to Mass every Sunday, and I've separated from my faith. I've killed people, and I've got some deep-seated anger. Deep in my chest."

He shrugged a shoulder. "Doesn't really matter, I guess. Not for me. This is something they preached about every Sunday, it seemed like. How if you don't straighten up and fly right on Earth, you'd wind up in this situation. I've gotta say, it's weird that it's got a name that isn't just... purgatory, you know? Also, that's a place in which you actually exist."

He wrinkled his nose. "I always thought of Purgatory as, like, this place that isn't a place. A plane of existence where you just... landed. And thought about your sins until you'd sorted yourself up, or gotten worse."

"And here we are" she replied. She didn't want to sound callous but the old faiths of Earth were a bit strange to her. Reading Earths history and seeing just how much could have been avoided if their religions hadn't been formed. Or maybe if they had just been formed differently... Well, there was no points dwelling on what-ifs, even if that was at times difficult especially for the Dax symbiont.

"Maybe this really is purgatory and maybe it isn't" she shrugged gently. "They haven't made it very clear as to how we're supposed to atone for our so-called sins either. It feels a bit more like... a prison only we're given more freedom than most of them would typically allow" she pondered aloud. "I want to just focus on learning more about this place. What we're supposed to do. Find out who is in charge"

"Well, if you listened to the speech, that guy." Bucky gestured over his shoulder, vaguely. He wasn't directly in charge, but they'd gone out of their way to make it clear to every last one of them that Michael was the mayor, an evidently important job that made Bucky very certain that the dick angel wasn't in charge of anything. Not even for a half a second.

He poured some more wine into his cup, considering what he might say. "It doesn't really matter, does it? We're all here. Might as well get used to it." He realized only after the words were out that they sounded bitter, mean. He cleared his throat. "I didn't—that's not exactly what I meant." He rubbed his metal thumb up the glass and then back down. "So, where are you from?"

Jadzia shrugged. "I was vaguely listening..." she replied in a playful tone. She was there to learn more about what was going on. See who was around. Of course, the free drinks certainly helped entice her attention, and she didn't get to dress up often either. Still, adapting to life in Gehenna was not going to be easy. At all.

"Me?" she asked. Well, there was the 100 bars of gold pressed latinum question. Could she be truthful? Tell him she was an alien? Or lie and try to pass as human? She looked human enough, save for the spots. At least on the surface. Anyone who could look further or sense more would have perhaps known about her symbiont without knowing what it was.

"I'm a Trill" she replied, curious about his reaction to the truth. "That is to say I'm an alien. Or at least alien to you. I'm not human, and I'm not from Earth either" she added with a small smile.

"That's a little racist, isn't it." Bucky straightened his back, feeling the bones pop back into place with an almost-audible crack. The benefit of metal-coated bones, he guessed. "I mean. You're not an alien on your world, are you? No. On your world, you're just you."

He turned his now-empty glass over and set it on the counter, turning it between metal fingers as he turned his head to look at her. "Humans aren't the end-all, be-all. I mean, we're pretty great, but we're not the only thing out there."

His fingers curled in against his palm. "But I'm not human, either. Not anymore. I mean, not technically. HUmans can get drunk. Humans die. I don't get drunk and I haven't died yet."

"No but in a place full of humans, steeped in Earth culture, I'm fairly alien" she replied with a smile that showed that she didn't really mind. She was used to Starfleet and it's multi-culturalism. She also had the benefit of all those lifetimes behind Dax. She was a mix of all of those past lifetimes and should the Dax symbiont move on to another host, they would experience so much more in the future.

"You still seem pretty human to me" she replied with a shrug. "Just because you can't get drunk, and you're good at surviving doesn't make you not human any more" she said, pausing. "How about we talk about something less serious?" she offered.

Less serious. Bucky Barnes pretty much didn't do less serious, because everything in his life these days was serious. The only thing he'd done since HYDRA that was less serious than what he did now was goat farming—and that hadn't ended in a good place. Or, rather, it hadn't ended at all, and he really hoped there was somebody in Wakanda who took over after he got vaporized.

He took a breath, and then, flexing his metal fingers, he said, "It's actually not a painful thing to talk about. I'm human, sort of. I'm just..." He flexed his metal fingers again. "Less human than most humans. I've got a serum that does... a hell of a lot, inside me." He tapped his breastbone twice with his metal hand. "So I'm not human, but I'm also not... not human."

He tapped his temple with his more easily-visible right hand. "Those, uh, those markings. Are they because of what you are, or are they tattoos?"
