Who: Open to All
When: Friday Night
Where: The Venial Sin
What: Party for the New mayor
Ratings/Warnings: Low (tba)

It hardly mattered that the Venial Sin had been rented out for the party, as it was packed. Though the ‘quality’ of that night’s clientele was not exactly the typical for an establishment that was so bent on maintaining a more posh atmosphere. Every citizen of Gehenna had been invited and that meant trainers, hoodies, shorts and every other kind of article of clothing that would have given the proprietor a heart attack. The city council were clearly doing their best to generate a little good will, opening up the ‘snootiest’ bar in Gehenna to the general public, of course the first drink being on their coin didn’t hurt either.

Maybe people were far more interested in that free drink and taking in the fancy surroundings than they were meeting the archangel of the hour, who happened to be just as indifferent. But the bar was packed and the city representatives who didn’t spend their time trying to disappear into the rich décor were already marking it down as a win.

Eventually the new, possibly temporary, mayor couldn’t ignore the calls for a speech and was half pushed toward the small stage not far from the bar. It may have earned a glare from the oldest of the archangels, but he did make a show of adjusting his green jacket and clearing his throat before addressing the crowd.

“I am aware that you all expect a few words. Promises for the future or an outline of my plans. Perhaps even some false sense of humility while trying to hide how pleased I am to be pressed into a position of governing. Instead, I will give you something novel for Gehenna, namely honesty: I am utterly horrified to not only find myself here but also by the thought that I might be in some sense responsible for the lot of you. I will say plainly that you are all damned regardless of how you may try to change your miserable lives. You are all detestable but unfortunately you cannot be left to sort yourselves out and would do unspeakable things to one another given the chance. That being the case, I reluctantly accept this position that I did not pursue, nor desire, for the sake of keeping some semblance of order.” He paused a moment, smiling to himself when he saw the horrified expressions of the few BAA members in the crowd. “But, so we do not start off on the wrong foot, feel free to charge the rest of the night’s drinks to the City of Gehenna. Good evening.”

Michael bowed his head then stepped down from the stage, quickly retreating to what he hoped was a quiet corner.

John had managed to observe the speech from the nearby bar. He stood there nursing his first drink of the evening. Well, his first drink in the Venial Sin at least, and it was certainly not going to be his last. Even if it wasn't his sort of place he was certain that no matter what he did, he'd find his way back again.

At least John wasn't the only one who looked out of place. Between Michael's pointed and blunt speech and his overall appearance, and of course the rest of the new arrivals, they all looked a bit out of place. How long before that changed? How long before people got comfortable with their new homes? With how things were? John had a lot of questions about their new living arrangements. He had a lot to figure out. At least he had Aphrodite there with him. It seemed no matter how many times they found themselves in another corner of the multi-verse, they were never apart for long if ever.

John smiled to himself as he turned back to face the bar. He brought the glass up to his lips and took a drink before placing it back on the bar. He could nurse it a little longer before he got himself another drink. No doubt on someone elses coin. From his trench coat pocket he pulled out a packet of cigarettes and a Zippo lighter. He lit one of his cigarettes and slid the pack and lighter on to the bar. He might as well make himself comfortable... It was going to be a long and interesting night.

Interesting was such a subjective term. Just because John saw opportunity in rubbing shoulders with the fools who had pushed a self-important bird into a position of responsibility didn't mean everyone did. Especially not to someone who often saw themselves above the boredom of human bureaucracy. As much as she might have wanted to complain that he was wasting his time by giving attention to something that wasn't her, Aphrodite knew better than to disparage John's methods when it came to collecting favors. He was almost as skilled at it as she was, something that would have been troubling for someone who took possible mortal threats more seriously. So she let him have his boring evening if that was what he truly desired, there was no stopping him really.

But there was no harm in reminding him what he was missing out on.

From seemingly nowhere, tender but insistent fingers traced imaginary swirl patters over his shirt, starting at the belt on his hip and moving up his side, just as there was a feather-light kiss at the corner of his jaw. The rest of the goddess materialized then, dressed plainly in an impressively tight little red dress and heels with her hair tossed over one shoulder. Normally she might have gone with something sheer, but she wasn't about to bless Michael or those that set up this dull little party with more of her skin. "Johnny," she purred lowly. "Please tell me you're not drinking in his honour. He's not worthy of the damage it does to your liver."

The feel of her fingers, tracing those patterns of him made him shiver at first. It was the little kiss that made him truly realise what was going on. She hadn't appeared yet, and still she was present, toying with him. Playing and teasing. A sly smile lifted the corners of his mouth when he realised what was happening and he relaxed into, picking up his glass and taking a casual drink as she materialised beside him.

"Me? Drinking in his honour?" John replied, his eyebrows raised as he looked at Dite. "Though you knew me better than that" he teased. "It's just fun watching the sod squirm. He's hardly comfortable here and now he's got some form of pretend authority he can flash about" John added before taking a drag from his cigarette.

He stopped for a moment to look her up and down. While she looked incredibly beautiful, and didn't she always, he knew hew true form. He knew how beautifully mind blowing she was. Still, she liked to be looked at and she liked the compliments.
"Take it you just slipped on the first thing you found then?" he said, choosing to go for a more jovial approach. There were a lot of ways it could be taken and he was interested to see how Dite went with it.

"Ooh." Her tone suggested that she had taken it as disapproval but her tiny smile and the playful glint in her eyes showed that wasn't the case. She generally kept this form around John's height, if not the exact same, but with those red stilettos on she had a good five inches on him, meaning that when she eventually tilted her head back and narrowed her eyes at him it was all for effect. "If you don't like it I can take it off."

When it came to Dite, nudity wasn't so much a threat as it was her default state. Not that John, or really anybody else, seemed to mind.

"Not here though," she said after a rather dramatic sigh and glance about the bar. It was fancy, sure, but not the kind of fancy she liked. "I don't want anyone thinking I approve of Mikey Boy. It's bad enough that you've been seen here. People know we're connected. I can't exactly pretend not to know you when I keep getting my hands inside your clothes in public. Now I'm being seen here trying to remind you that you have something much better waiting for you anywhere but here, and I won't break your nose the way he might if he spots you."

He didn't verbally respond to her mention of nudity. He didn't really have to. How he felt showed in his body language. The way he briefly stretched his neck to the side. The way he smiled to himself and allowed his mind to wander to intimate moments they spent together. Where time evaporated and all that was left was them. He needed to focus.

"Right, because walking in here means you support him" John replied sarcastically. "I know I came for the laugh, and I'm fairly certain some others came to scope out the competition" he added, glancing very briefly beyond the bar. "So I wouldn't worry too much if I were you. Hardly worried meself" he shrugged, flicking ash carelessly on to the floor.

"However, on that other note, let's just say I'm open to suggestions" he said, turning his head to face her, that cocky and confident smile on his face. The sort that made his eyes sparkle all the more.

"Are you? How kind of you to indulge me." She said, mirroring his smile. They could have their serious moments, and their sweet moments. John Constantine was far more tender than anyone would have believed, especially himself, and that was a secret she kept close to her heart. But there was something special about the way they teased and played with one another. He could keep up with her most of the time, something that was rare even for gods, and she indulged in their playful back and forth as often as he could stand. "I mean, I can see you're having such a wild time tonight, making time to even consider something with me really does mean so much to me, sweet Johnny."

She moved in a little closer, her hand drifting over to play with his tie. "I could positively devour you right here against this bar," she kept her warm, soft voice low so he would have to give her his full attention. Not that she needed simple tricks like that with him. John likely remembered very clearly all the times she'd done much more scandalous things to him in public, if her getting that close to him didn't jog his memory enough on that score then nothing would. "But like with my nudity, I don't think many people here deserve to see that so I may have to take you somewhere more private."

With that Dite pressed herself against him, that hand that had been fiddling with his tie now moving up so she could wrap an arm around his neck. While she whispered incredibly filthy ideas into his ear she did let her eyes drift through the crowd, lazily 'scoping out the competition'. She wouldn't say it aloud, but she could see the sense in it, at least for him.

She was playing with him. Toying around. Not that she did it to trick or deceive him but she certainly wanted his attention. Was she trying to distract him from something? Lure him away from something? Did she want him to change his ways? To stop all of his usual forms of wheeling, dealing, mingling and working? That didn't seem right. Something certainly seemed odd though but he couldn't put his finger on what it was.

Did it matter? Wherever they went, since the day they met, they always found one another again. Their relationship was strong enough to withstand jumps through different universes, always finding one another. Always staying together. He was thankful for that, even if he had a funny way of showing it.

John had one hand on the bar, his cigarette between his fingers. The other hand came to rest on Dite's hip, finding that nice like dip that seemed to fit his hand perfectly. Or maybe it was being in love that made it seem that way. Tingles ran over his skin as she whispered into his ear. That temptation was there and it was strong.

"What if I were to ask you for a little bit of time?" he asked, risking her wrath. "And then after that time passes, no matter what I am doing, you can whisk me away for as long as you want..." he paused. "Within my mortal limitations of course" he added with a little wink. "And then maybe we can..." he paused and whispered back some of that same talk that Dite had given him with his own little spin on it.

There had been a rather pronounced pout at his asking for time. It wasn't often that someone resisted her when she offered them their favorite things, especially with John as he always seemed happy to indulge her desire for him. And she had realized that he wasn't simply there for a drink, and maybe she was being unreasonable in asking him to leave but that hadn't kept her from trying to tempt him away. Of course, by the time he finished that pout was gone and she was smiling again, even letting out a delighted little giggle.

She always got what she wanted eventually, and sometimes she could give as well as she got. If anyone deserved kindness from her it was John.

"Oh Johnny love, I know why you're here. I know what you want. I know that if I dragged you off now and showed you the time of your life your mind is eventually going to return here and possible missed opportunities. That's fine, that's just how you are, I'm used to it." She reached up, running her fingers over his hairline, playing at fixing a few of his more wild hairs while really just using it as an excuse to touch him a little more. "I can keep myself entertained until you're finished, don't worry about time. I don't want to rush you, this stuff takes time, I get that. Once you're satisfied call to me like you usually do and I'll show you real satisfaction while pushing the limits of your mortal limitations."

Dite stole a quick little kiss from him before taking the cigarette from his hand and easing it back between his lips. It was a more physical reminder of the control he often enjoyed her exerting over him. And perhaps that she could force him to lose interest in his networking if she really wanted to. "So I'll see you later, darling, just don't take forever. You know I have never been good at patience."

Without approaching anyone else, John was already forming a reputation with those around them. The way Dite moved around him, the way she looked at him. It was in the way she touched and played with him, and the ways in which he interacted with her in return. He wanted them to think certain things and depending on the person, he was creating just the impression he wanted.

John returned that quick kiss, a smile creeping over his lips when she placed the cigarette in his mouth. He winked at her, clicking his tongue against the roof of his mouth.
"Wouldn't dream of it, love" he replied confidently. "I'll be in touch soon" he added, bringing his hand up to pluck the cigarette from his lips, taking a long drag. He blew the smoke away before leaning in to kiss her, wanting to catch her by surprise.

So, James Buchanan Barnes had this policy. Or, rather, he had had this policy prior to HYDRA, and in the stretch of time between "being the Asset" and "remembering he was a human being with a heart and soul", he hadn't yet picked it back up. This policy, you see, was not tolerating bullies. It was one of the only reasons he'd been okay with going over to fight the Nazis and leave Steve behind all on his moronic lonesome. (Okay, so, Steve hadn't been so bad, but Bucky told him to stay away from the war, and what did Steven Grant Rogers immediately do? Yes. Thank you. Exactly the fucking opposite.)

This would be a moot point, a quiet moment of consideration if, and only if, he had not heard the asshole mayor's speech. You are all detestable but unfortunately you cannot be left to sort yourselves out? Oh, Bucky wanted to punch him. Right in the nose.

Listen. HYDRA had made Bucky do some bad things. Bucky had been involved in a few nasty incidents. Had taken on some situations that left him with blood on his hands, even before the war. Put a rifle in his hands, and James Barnes was one of the deadliest soldiers the United States had ever trained.

But this guy's speech. This guy's speech.

"If there weren't so many people here," he muttered, rubbing the knuckles on his left hand, "I might be inclined." More to himself, really, but it was true. He didn't know who this guy was, or what he was, but the next time he saw him...

Jadzia had spent one of her coins on a new outfit. A lack of replicators and familiarity made things trickier than she was accustomed to but after some time, she eventually found something she liked.

She wore an ankle length red dress with a split up the side of the skirt that ran all the way up to the top of her thigh. The dress was fitted nicely to her form, the collar line draped around her shoulders and below her collarbones, complete wit loose, flowing skirt. It had long fitted sleeves, and around her shoulder she carried a black handbag with a thick knotted strap. Her Trill spots were on display, running from the top of her forehead to her feet. They wrapped down her neck and along her body, then down her legs. People unfamiliar with Trill just thought her spots were tattoos, typically. It amused her.

"You might be inclined to what?" she asked as she walked over towards Bucky. She offered a warm but curious smile, hoping her question would get his attention.

Bucky turned, arching an eyebrow at the woman with spots. "Punch that jerk in the face." He nodded towards the skinny little guy headed toward the corner. "Did you hear what he said?"

His entire body shifted a little, his head dipping as he nodded towards the new mayor. There was a certain level of rage there, but he was letting it go. Because to punch a stranger in a place like purgatory, when so many of them were like he was—different, changed, beyond human—was maybe a terrifically bad idea.

"Evidently, we're all detestable." He gestured to the bar. "But hey, at least he's buying us a drink afterwards."

"Sorry I asked" she replied with raised eyebrows. She didn't sound overly offended at least. She just readjusted her bag on her shoulder and glanced over in the direction of who Bucky was talking about.

"And yes, I did hear what he said" she added. "Probably why I kind of agree with you" she added with a dazzling smile. "I think maybe we should take up that offer of a free drink. You're welcome to join me if you like?" she offered, hoping her friendly mannerisms and speech would help somewhat. And if not? Well she could always find someone else to share a drink with. It wasn't as if she liked their situation any more than anyone else. She didn't believe they were damned, nor did she believe that anything supernatural or spiritual was involved either. It wasn't purgatory, it had to be something else. She was convinced.

"Sure." Bucky gestured toward the bar with his metal hand, eyes on the rest of the bar for a brief moment. Old habits died hard, and scouting out a place was more than just a habit. They'd trained it into him, pushed it on him at every last moment, made sure that the Soldier never entered a place without knowing everything there was to know. Every last person, ever last position. He knew how to take out the entire bar, but he didn't move to do it, because HYDRA was gone, and he was... just Bucky again.

With a metal arm, sure, but just Bucky.

He gestured for a bartender, watching one nod and indicate with a finger he'd be over in a minute. "I'm Bucky, by the way." He nodded towards the man he'd just indicated he wanted to punch. "And wanting to punch him aside... I'm kind of over being a weapon these days."

Jadzia glanced back at Michael again. She was curious to meet him properly but she wasn't in much of a rush. She wondered just how relieved he would be if someone else took the job from him. How much he'd grow to like the role he had been given.

"So let's share and drink and ignore him then" she replied with a casual shrug of her shoulders. "I'm Jadzia Dax" she added. "We spoke on the network. It's good to meet you in person" she added, glancing at the different bottles behind the bar.

"So what sort of think to you like to drink then? Something strong? Sweet? Bitter?" she asked. She knew she was going to have to try and remember to use older terminology, especially given that Gehenna looked a bit like Earth in the 2000's. Until she knew she had no chance of disturbing any timelines, she was going to be careful.

"Doesn't really matter," Bucky said. He sat down on one of the bar stools, one he was sure had a seat beside it for Miss Dax. She was tall like he was, and he realized only after sitting down that they were matched eye-to-eye. Not that this bothered him; tall women were kind of a turn-on in their own way. Bucky wasn't looking specifically to be turned on, but he wasn't going to ignore specific giant signs of appeal.

He turned to look at her spots, and his brain supplied that they were unusual, but nothing to be immediately concerned about. His brain noticed things most people didn't, and his common sense told him that it generally wasn't his business any way you sliced it. "I can't get drunk. So I drink whatever. Rotgut usually works best. Nobody cares how much you drink, plus it's cheap. No point wasting the good stuff on somebody who won't make good use of it."

Bucky lifted a hand for the bartender again, frowning as he pointedly ignored Bucky and went off to serve someone else. He shrugged the metal shoulder and turned back. "What about you, Miss Dax? You get drunk?"

"Well, in that case..." she said, turning to look behind the bar. Maybe there was something from home? It was worth asking.

When the bartender approached, Dax gave him her most approachable smile and asked, "I was wondering, do you have any Klingon Blood wine?"

The bartender paused and looked behind him before walking over to a shelf and taking a metal looking bottle and bring it over to her. He reached behind the bar and took out two brassy looking cups and placed those down on the bar. Jadzia smiled and pointed in the direction of Michael.
"That's on him. Thank you" she said. The bartender nodded and walked away.

"Now this is the stuff you have to try. If you find it difficult to get drunk this should hit the spot" she said, picking up the bottle and taking the top off to pour two healthy measures into the cups. She placed the bottle back down, picked up both cups and offered Bucky one.

Klingon blood wine? Bucky'd never heard of it, but until he'd wound up in Wakanda, he'd had no idea what the hell vibranium was, either. Or, rather, he knew Steve's shield was vibranium, but not that more of the metal existed. He shrugged and took the offered cup. "It's not that I 'can't' get drunk," he said, frowning down into the liquid. "It's more that getting drunk requires me to be able to become intoxicated."

He downed the cup, pausing to make a face at the taste. It was different, all right. "My body processes toxins too quickly for the drunk effect to last more than about ten seconds. I mean. If it's a lot of toxin—I'm talking literal horse doses here—it might keep me out for about half an hour."

He wrinkled his nose. "That's some wine, though."

Jadzia watched Bucky knock back the wine, and impressed look on her face. She wasn't used to seeing people hand Klingon booze so well, so easily! But if he was telling the truth about his body processed things like that, well it would sort of make sense. That was interesting to Jadzia. She imagined it would be far more interesting to Julian though.

"I try not to drink it too often. It's definitely a drink for sharing and I figured, what better time than now?" she said with a shrug, taking a drink from her own cup. "Feel free to top up your glass if you want more?" Jadzia offered. They had the bottle and she certainly wasn't going to drink it all. A glass or two maybe. That would do the trick. She didn't have to worry about Klingons pouring more wine for her when she wasn't yet done with what she had.

"So, do you know anyone else here or are you on your own too?" she asked.

"Fortunately," Bucky said, reaching for the bottle to re-fill his glass. "Fortunately, I am the only one that I've seen so far. None of my friends are here, which means they either aren't dead yet, or, more appropriately, they managed to make it into Heaven or Hell already."

He set the bottle down between them, frowning at the liquid in his cup. "I'm hoping it was Heaven, but there's no telling. Most of them didn't really have religion, but I always kinda thought..." He dropped off, metal flingers clicking against the glass. "Well. It doesn't matter what I thought."

He turned on something like a smile, or something close enough that that's what it should look like to her. "What about you? The lone ranger? Or do you have friends from home?"

Jadzia wasn't so sure about that. She wasn't dead, she was sure of that much, nor was the symbiont inside her. No one was dead, and there was no such thing as heaven or hell... She wasn't really in the mood for an argument so instead, she chose to just observe. She was never one to just dismiss something entirely without evidence.

"No. At least I haven't been able to find anyone I know so far" she replied after taking a drink of wine. She placed the cup back down on the bar and licked her lips to get the droplets that had remained there. "So I suppose I'm the lone ranger?" she asked with a smirk and a shrug of her shoulders. "Don't get me wrong, I would be glad to find someone I knew here but I wouldn't wish being here on any of them" she added.

He spun the cup in his left hand, watching the fingers sort it out almost before his brain did. Almost, because though it was robotic, it didn't act on its own. Or Shuri hadn't told him it did, anyway, so...

"I don't mind being the only," he said. Bucky picked his cup up and drank from it, frowning down at it. "I was the only for a good chunk of time. Solitude doesn't bother me." No, what bothered Bucky was existing in this place that he'd only thought of sparingly since HYDRA took him. What bothered him was the idea that any of the HYDRA officers, any of his friends, anyone he knew could wind up here.

He played with his cup again, rotating it around the tabletop between his hands. "I guess I miss home, but... I'm not entirely surprised to be where we are."

Jadzia took another drink while she listened to Bucky talk. He was a well built man. Maybe a warrior? Soldier? A fighter of some sorts for sure... And handsome at that.

"Why are you not surprised?" she asked. The Dax symbiont had lived several lifetimes and didn't exactly hold back. Dax was typically straight forward, especially thanks to previous influences. There was no point in tip-toeing around things, was there?

"Actually, you don't have to answer that" she said after a brief pause. "It's not something I'm trying to put too much thought into, honestly. The thing I don't understand is how we got here. We all seem to be from different timelines, different cultures and backgrounds. A lot about this place doesn't make much sense to me" she said pausing. "I'm a scientist. I like to question things" she said with a soft smile, before draining her glass and reaching for the bottle to top it up.

"I've noticed that." Bucky gestured towards the bar itself, using his flesh hand to do it. "But see, this is part and parcel with my upbringing. I went to Mass every Sunday, and I've separated from my faith. I've killed people, and I've got some deep-seated anger. Deep in my chest."

He shrugged a shoulder. "Doesn't really matter, I guess. Not for me. This is something they preached about every Sunday, it seemed like. How if you don't straighten up and fly right on Earth, you'd wind up in this situation. I've gotta say, it's weird that it's got a name that isn't just... purgatory, you know? Also, that's a place in which you actually exist."

He wrinkled his nose. "I always thought of Purgatory as, like, this place that isn't a place. A plane of existence where you just... landed. And thought about your sins until you'd sorted yourself up, or gotten worse."

"And here we are" she replied. She didn't want to sound callous but the old faiths of Earth were a bit strange to her. Reading Earths history and seeing just how much could have been avoided if their religions hadn't been formed. Or maybe if they had just been formed differently... Well, there was no points dwelling on what-ifs, even if that was at times difficult especially for the Dax symbiont.

"Maybe this really is purgatory and maybe it isn't" she shrugged gently. "They haven't made it very clear as to how we're supposed to atone for our so-called sins either. It feels a bit more like... a prison only we're given more freedom than most of them would typically allow" she pondered aloud. "I want to just focus on learning more about this place. What we're supposed to do. Find out who is in charge"

"Well, if you listened to the speech, that guy." Bucky gestured over his shoulder, vaguely. He wasn't directly in charge, but they'd gone out of their way to make it clear to every last one of them that Michael was the mayor, an evidently important job that made Bucky very certain that the dick angel wasn't in charge of anything. Not even for a half a second.

He poured some more wine into his cup, considering what he might say. "It doesn't really matter, does it? We're all here. Might as well get used to it." He realized only after the words were out that they sounded bitter, mean. He cleared his throat. "I didn't—that's not exactly what I meant." He rubbed his metal thumb up the glass and then back down. "So, where are you from?"

Jadzia shrugged. "I was vaguely listening..." she replied in a playful tone. She was there to learn more about what was going on. See who was around. Of course, the free drinks certainly helped entice her attention, and she didn't get to dress up often either. Still, adapting to life in Gehenna was not going to be easy. At all.

"Me?" she asked. Well, there was the 100 bars of gold pressed latinum question. Could she be truthful? Tell him she was an alien? Or lie and try to pass as human? She looked human enough, save for the spots. At least on the surface. Anyone who could look further or sense more would have perhaps known about her symbiont without knowing what it was.

"I'm a Trill" she replied, curious about his reaction to the truth. "That is to say I'm an alien. Or at least alien to you. I'm not human, and I'm not from Earth either" she added with a small smile.

"That's a little racist, isn't it." Bucky straightened his back, feeling the bones pop back into place with an almost-audible crack. The benefit of metal-coated bones, he guessed. "I mean. You're not an alien on your world, are you? No. On your world, you're just you."

He turned his now-empty glass over and set it on the counter, turning it between metal fingers as he turned his head to look at her. "Humans aren't the end-all, be-all. I mean, we're pretty great, but we're not the only thing out there."

His fingers curled in against his palm. "But I'm not human, either. Not anymore. I mean, not technically. HUmans can get drunk. Humans die. I don't get drunk and I haven't died yet."

"No but in a place full of humans, steeped in Earth culture, I'm fairly alien" she replied with a smile that showed that she didn't really mind. She was used to Starfleet and it's multi-culturalism. She also had the benefit of all those lifetimes behind Dax. She was a mix of all of those past lifetimes and should the Dax symbiont move on to another host, they would experience so much more in the future.

"You still seem pretty human to me" she replied with a shrug. "Just because you can't get drunk, and you're good at surviving doesn't make you not human any more" she said, pausing. "How about we talk about something less serious?" she offered.

Less serious. Bucky Barnes pretty much didn't do less serious, because everything in his life these days was serious. The only thing he'd done since HYDRA that was less serious than what he did now was goat farming—and that hadn't ended in a good place. Or, rather, it hadn't ended at all, and he really hoped there was somebody in Wakanda who took over after he got vaporized.

He took a breath, and then, flexing his metal fingers, he said, "It's actually not a painful thing to talk about. I'm human, sort of. I'm just..." He flexed his metal fingers again. "Less human than most humans. I've got a serum that does... a hell of a lot, inside me." He tapped his breastbone twice with his metal hand. "So I'm not human, but I'm also not... not human."

He tapped his temple with his more easily-visible right hand. "Those, uh, those markings. Are they because of what you are, or are they tattoos?"

Jo had spent most of her time after her arrival in Gehenna scoping the place out. Rule number one for a hunter, always have all the information you can manage before something shitty goes down. In a lot of cases, that, unfortunately, didn't leave much time. In this one, Jo figured she had more time than she would necessarily need seeing as how this place seemed to be fifty pounds of shitty in a five-pound bag.

She'd heard about the party for the new mayor from a couple of people she'd passed by earlier and thought it might be a good idea to check it out. Knowing who would be somewhat running the place would be good information, and the fact that at least the first drink was free didn't hurt either.

She wasn't keen on giving coins with her name away to people she didn't know, but if the first drink was free, she may find a good reason to play this little game and make it beneficial for herself.

When the "new mayor" got up to give his little speech, Jo found herself listening, if only pretending not to. She couldn't help but chuckle softly at the statements that came from the man's mouth. He wasn't wrong, after all. Doing what she did and working in bars to make money on the side had her seeing a lot of the worst kinds of shit mankind had to offer. Things that went bump in the night were only a part of the reason she'd learned to protect herself early on and how to use a weapon. Humans could be just as bad as the supernatural, if not worse sometimes.

Tossing back her first drink of the night, since she'd been nursing it for a little bit, the sound of the man of honor saying the rest of the drinks were basically on the house had her chuckling once again and ordering a second. Maybe tonight wouldn't be a complete loss. There were always interesting things to find out when people got to drinking and Jo was nothing if not observant. She listened. She took in information like a sponge. And from there, she always had a game plan. This was just one more place in a list of many. Things likely weren't all that different here than anywhere else.

Watching the new mayor take a seat in a corner of the room, she rose her bottle to him in recognition and gave him a slight nod of respect before taking a drink and looking around the room once again.

She knew all she had to do was play the waiting game... and that was one game she was definitely a pro at.

Ardyn had just got himself a nice glass of champagne. It wasn't because he was in any particular mood to celebrate. He just enjoyed the taste and since it was free? Well, who was he to argue! He particularly enjoyed the sensation of the bubbles on his tongue. That crisp and sweet flavour. It was one of lifes pleasures that he did not take for granted. Although at that point in his life, he was unsure where he had picked up the taste from. Or rather who he had got it from...

He smiled to himself, watching peoples reactions to Michael's speech. The other man clearly did not want the job and yet there he was, giving a speech in front of a most baffled audience. Michael didn't want the job and most of them didn't even want to be in Gehenna. For Ardyn it was a sort of escape and one he was still coming to terms with.

"I trust that you are at least somewhat enjoying the festivities?" Ardyn said to Jo. He had noticed her raising her bottle to the new mayor and found her reaction more interesting than the majorities mutterings and groans.

"Oh, do excuse me. I should have introduced myself. Ardyn Izunia" he said with a small bow.

She'd been somewhat surprised when she was approached and spoken to, but a lifetime of schooling her features and grifting in an effort to blend in and get the information she needed during hunts came in real handy when it came to not showing it. On the surface, she looked as calm and collected as she had before the man spoke to her. Instead, she gave him a similar nod in greeting and took another swig of her beer.

"What's not to enjoy? Free booze and a free show, decent start for a new life in good ol' Purgatory, right? Or would that be unlife? Not exactly sure how to word that one." Yes, the sarcasm was strong in this one. Anyone who knew her could tell a person that. Still, the guy in front of her wasn't the reason for her ending up here — probably. So being a bitch wasn't necessary.

"Sorry. I'm Jo. Jo Harvelle. Nice to meet you, Ardyn Izunia. Can I buy you a free beer?" she asked, raising an eyebrow in question. Surely no one turned down free alcohol, right? Or... was it actually free? She wasn't sure herself, so she supposed she should probably find out.

Later.

"What brings you to Purgatory, Ardyn Izunia?" What nifty little secrets was he not exactly hiding?
