Quen found herself at loose ends on Monday afternoon when Peony cancelled their daily magic lesson. That was very unlike Peony: in the six weeks since Quen had begun receiving private lessons from the elder black mage, Peony hadn't cancelled even once. She'd said she had business to take care of. It must have been very important and come up suddenly, Quen reasoned, to have made Peony cancel. So she took her mentor's advice and meditated for a half hour. She'd used the casting room they'd had reserved while working on Aero in order to minimize distractions.
The stone casting rooms were a bit chilly, though, and so now Quen was standing outside while she waited for Cy. It was pretty hot outside, and so she'd gone from one extreme to the other. Still, the motionless half hour in the casting room had left a chill deep in her bones. The heat of the sun was a welcome relief.
She was quite looking forward to spending some time with Cy. Quen, who liked to pretend to be fearless, was a bit afraid of Cormac, but she adored his assistant. She'd been delighted to find out that, on her first free weekday afternoon in ages, Cy wanted to go out into the city with her and listen to music and shop for magic supplies. Even after her grounding had ended, Quen spent most of her time studying and meditating. It was worth every minute of the time she invested if it was getting her closer to her Black Mage exam—she and Peony hadn't discussed that yet, but Quen knew that was where she wanted to go with it, and she also knew that with the progress she was making, that exam would be a reality fairly soon. Still, all of that work made her feel incredibly stir-crazy and dull.
Really, an afternoon off was exactly what she needed.
