The frequent visits to the Morning Glory had resulted in the staff greeting Mag and Kiernan as friends rather than customers. They were shown to a table on the upper patio and handed menus out of formality more than anything. For once, the Valendian summer sun wasn't trying to imitate that of the desert, and there was a soft breeze blowing. Such pleasant weather, the mimosa in her hand and Kiernan's company was all Mag could ask for to start her birthday on a bright note. Raising her glass, Mag said, "Toasting to myself might be in poor taste, so here is to the day the owner of the café is so used to us he doesn't bother charging the extra fee for the patio.” “An owner of an eating establishment who doesn’t want to throw me out the instant he sees me,” said Kiernan, meeting his glass with hers, “I’ll drink to that.” After he took a sip, he grinned and raised his glass again. “And I’ll toast to the magnificent lady who made that possible, whose day of birth is today,” he added, his playful smile also carrying the sincerity of his words. Mag smiled. "I'm sure your own charms had something to do with that. And the fact that the layout of this place isn't as good for brawling as Puzzles'. Not enough cover, for one thing, and the chairs are too pretty to use in a fight." Her tone was teasing, as it always was when she made such comments — she could hardly reproach Kiernan anything, when she was no stranger to the occasional pub brawl. "But if you want me to take full credit for our good standing…" Careful not to upset the table and their half-finished brunches, she leaned over to give him a kiss. He chuckled into the kiss as he returned it. "What can I say, yours is a calming presence. If no one's hitting on you, that is." He winked as she settled back into her seat. "Good thing this place is just classy enough that no one tries. Or," he added as an afterthought, "maybe I am that intimidating." "Oh, clearly," Mag said, laughing. "You can be the intimidating one, darling. At most, I would throw food at anyone who dared to interrupt, if this wasn't so delicious." And while there had been one unwanted interruption at a bar that Mag did not at all regret, it was undoubtedly nicer to sit unperturbed, toasting to ridiculous things. “Beware the flying crepes and omelets,” he said with a grin. “Especially fresh out of the oven. Good thing the food here is too good to waste.” He took another sip of mimosa — the best part of brunch — and said, “Any exciting plans for the day, or should I let our waiter know it’s your birthday and let things get really interesting?” Mag looked behind her at the waiter in question, who was effusively greeting another of the café's regulars. She had no doubt that if he found out it was her birthday, things would get really interesting — but she might as well have a show with the meal, she supposed. "Do your worst, then," she said to Kiernan, grinning. And indeed things got interesting — to see the maitre d' arrive with pancakes speared with candles and a sudden bout of song that made the people at the next table over jump in their seats, and the waiter joining in while she pretended to direct them by waving her hand in the air — but then again, birthdays happened only once a year. |
