If Merri seemed subdued that morning, Ran pretended not to notice. She left the bed to get them breakfast and give him some space to gather his thoughts, and her own. Perhaps she had pushed too far, too quickly—it seemed as though he had not quite been sure they were dating until she had told him straight out that she liked him. He did not seem like the type who might leave in the morning and never come back―which, she supposed, would not be the end of the world—rather, he seemed like the type to stay and shout it from the rooftops. That sort of romantic naiveté was endearing, but also a surefire way to get herself discovered. He was too close to Min and her father; even if most everyone else barely remembered Matsudaira’s estranged daughter, it only took one person to blow a cover. Merri walked into the kitchen as she was turning off the stove. She gave him a smile as she placed the scrambled eggs, miso soup and rice on the kitchen table; then after a moment’s hesitation, she walked up to him and kissed him before pulling away and taking a seat. “I hope you have slept well,” she said, carefully. “I did,” he replied, a bright smile gradually appearing on his face. He still couldn’t believe everything that had happened the previous evening, and it still seemed too good to be true. He feared, even, that it might be, that he had imagined some things and forgotten others. Hesitantly, he took a seat at the table, eyes locked on Ran’s. “I hope you did, too?” She smiled back and nodded. "I slept well, yes. It was nice to have you with me. It is nice, still," she corrected herself. She took one of the two bowls of soup and said, "I'm afraid this is all I had in the fridge, but if you tell me what you like to eat for breakfast, I shall be sure to buy it for next time." Her eyes searched his face for a reaction, to see if her impression of him was correct. His smile grew even brighter, and a light blush covered his cheeks. “Next time?” he asked, unable to keep the hopefulness and cheer out of his voice. "Next time," she confirmed, smiling. "If you want, that is." Merri couldn’t help it. He stood and went over to Ran and brushed his lips against hers. “Yes,” he breathed when he pulled away, his heart full. “Yes, of course!” "I am glad," she said, lacing her fingers through his. "I want to keep seeing you as well, Merri. I really like you." “I really like you, too.” Their foreheads touched, and Merri sighed happily. “Thank you. This — you make me so happy, and I just... I’m afraid to believe... that I could be so lucky.” She kissed him again, then said, "You make me happy too, Merri. And I am sorry that maybe I have not been able to give you some things you wanted, like meeting your friends." She averted her eyes for a moment. "I know how important it is to you." His grin faded a little at that. He knew that she was a private person -- she said so herself — and yes, he wanted her to meet his friends, for he knew that they would love her and she would love them, but he respected her, first and foremost, and in the end, that particular want mattered little. “Of course,” he murmured. “I understand. And it’s not more important to me than you.” He paused a moment, unsure of how to ask the question. “I… can I tell them about you, at least? I mean, I won’t say anything you wouldn’t want me to, but…” He winced, everything sounding stupid in his head. It seemed a worthy compromise—she had expected some resistance on this point, but perhaps she need not have been concerned. "Yes, if you would like. I am sure they will wonder." Better to give that curiosity an answer, no matter how vague, than to leave a motivation to investigate on their own. "I simply do not know if I could meet them all yet. I am sure they are very kind." She cupped Merri's jaw with her hand and gave him an apologetic smile. "But once before, the person that I was seeing... I dove headfirst into the relationship, I would have shouted it from the rooftops, I knew almost everyone he knew, we went everywhere together." Ran paused and took a deep breath. "But when it ended it was as though my whole life had been ripped from me. I do not know if I can handle that sort of heartbreak again." Merri winced as his mind stole away for the first time in a long time to Wil, and how quickly and eagerly Merri had entered that relationship, how fast he had fallen, how giddy it had made him every day, and how hard he had crashed when it came to an end. He pulled Ran closer, finding that he needed her presence now to be sure that this was real, that she was real, and he nodded slowly. “I… understand.” He kissed her. “And… know that I’ll do everything in my power not to hurt you. I promise that I’ll do all that I can to make sure that I never do.” Ran felt her pulse quicken; her voice was not as controlled as she would have liked when she said, "With words like that, you could make anyone fall for you." Again, Merri blushed. “I’m… glad that you… well.” He smiled. “I mean it. I mean every word. I…” He bit his lip. “I’m happy that you… like me, that you…” He was finding words difficult again. She did not finish the sentence for him. "I am happy as well," she said, smiling back. "I am lucky to have met you, Merri." She kissed him; then, taking a step back, "Let us eat before the food grows cold, shall we?" (That the topic would come up again in the future, she had no doubt, but she would overcome that hurdle when it came.) |
