Now that she was two full weeks into her new schedule, Quen had the routine down. She went to lunch in the dining hall after her morning classes, and then took a waystone up to the 9th floor. Forty-three paces down the corridor, and she was at Peony's door. She knocked, she sat at the table, and Peony served her scalding tea. She cooled her tea, and then sipped it stone-cold while she cooled bowl after bowl of water. After that first time, she hadn't broken anything, but she did freeze her hands or the water or both more often than she did the exercise correctly.
She'd started to get frustrated with her lack of progress, but she was determined not to complain. The significance of this opportunity wasn't lost on her. If she failed with so much private attention, what hope was there for her as a mage? So in the past few days, she'd added one more step to her routine: before knocking at Peony's door, she took a few deep breaths and whispered to herself, "Patience. You'll get it eventually. No one would waste this much time on something hopeless."
She'd cried twice, so far, but never until she was safely back in her own room on the second floor with the door locked.
There was no reason to expect that this afternoon would be any different. Even so, she hoped to see some progress at long last.
