Her eyes opened, she had been drifting in and out of unconsciousness for what seemed forever. More snow had piled over her body which now shivered uncontrollably. She was losing heat. Shifting her gaze down she could see pink. Pink snow covered her legs and pooled around her. Her body had grown entirely numb, and while she couldn’t feel the pain as much she also couldn’t gage the gravity of the situation. In an attempt to lift herself up, her body collapsed back down on the damp snow below her. Sleep was beckoning her into its warm embrace, but she knew to fight it as best she could. If this wasn’t a sign of the gravity of the situation, then she didn’t know what else was. Rolling on her side, she curled her knees closer to her body-- anything to keep her from dropping any more heat. Her arm was broken. Was her leg too? She couldn’t tell. She had to find her communicator. She had to tell someone. At the edge of the field, would anyone find her out here lying in her own sloshed up bloody mess. There it was. Pulling the communicator, she could only think to thank Fumiya for his painful lessons. At the sight of the little machine in her hand, she noticed her eyesight was failing. Blood, how much had she lost? Her hand had begun writing a message, she had been writing the recipients and ready to send when a shot of pain went through her body. Letting go, she curled up tighter, shutting her eyes. Already she had forgotten about the message, and already the world had gone dark again. The fight may have been over, but his work was not. Sure, they lived in a world with huge monsters, and dangerous threats, but this was just starting to get fucking ridiculous at this point. How much was the city, or the nearby areas going to get attacked like this? How often? Sure all cities got attacked sometime, it was a reality of the world they lived in, but this was just getting to be too much. Though, having taken care of those who had been brought over to him, Darius found himself standing, stretching and trying to look for where his assistance could next be needed most when the faintest hint of movement, of something shifting in the snow in the distance caught his eye. What the hell was….. Was that a person…? Shit. Quickly, Darius dashed away from the group, heading towards - what he hoped - to be a still alive person, and well, he wouldn’t be wrong in that hope. Even if the amount of blood surrounding the body would make anyone else think twice the white mage slid down to his knees, checking over a few thing - assuring he wouldn’t cause further damage first - before moving to gently roll the body over and. “Fuck. Fuck, fuck, fuck.” Audrey. “Stay with me.” He demanded as gloves were yanked off, and he shifted down, gentle beginning to undo her jacket, and other outer clothing. He’d need to get his hands down to skin - or at least close - to make sure he didn’t heal her incorrectly. “Com’mon Audrey, say something.” Anything his mind urged as he continued to check for broken bones. “Hey!” Darius yelled back to a couple of his companions after find a pulse. “We got a live one over here, needs some serious help though!” They’d need to get her to a clinic ASAP. That voice, she thought, her mind drifting in and out. With effort, she was able to force her eyes open for a second. It was blurry, but she knew the voice. Her good hand reached blindly for Darius’ arm as if trying to stop him. “No, it’s cold,” she choked, her head immediately pressing to the side as she tried to spit out whatever blood had filled in her mouth. Her body curled back up again, the shivering intensifying as her torn up coat came off. Audrey’s eyes had fluttered open again, focusing on Darius the best she could. Had he gotten her message? Her head moved again, finding the communicator lying in the snow next to her. The message had never been sent. In a last ditch effort she had tried as before to get up again, but the strain was too much and she let her back fall down against the snow. “I know, I know.” His voice was strained, the words a little too quick. “But it’ll be warm soon, alright? Just gotta be cold for a bit.” Though one of her wounds caught his eye, and Darius had to bite his own tongue to keep the curses at bay. Quickly, he unwrapped a scarf from his neck, and used it to apply pressure to a wound that still bled. If he lost her due to blood loss…. No. No, he couldn’t think like that. “Just stay still, alright? I’ll get this taken care of.” And fuck all, he would if it killed him. “Focus on my face, my voice, alright? Just stay with me, yeah?” A turn of his head was given, checking on the progress of his allies that were supposed to be helping him. “GET THE FUCK OVER HERE NOW!” At the feeling of the warm scarf being wrapped around her body, Audrey tried to open her eyes again. “Your scarf,” she complained, “it’s going to get dirt--” her voice cut off into a whimper as he pressed against her wound. “S-stop it hurts.” She was too tired to even think of the consequences. Dying hadn’t even processed through her mind, this wasn’t like when she was sick. Audrey just wanted to close her eyes and find a warm place. The more she tried to focus, the more the world begun to spin. Her good hand had slapped the ground at her side as if that would stop her from drifting, but she felt herself losing. Audrey had looked at him one more time before her eyes rolled into the back of her head. Darius had panicked. Right then and there when her eyes closed, he began yelling, screaming at people to pick the pace the fuck up. A functional meltdown of sorts as he remembered his training, was successful in treating her the best he could in such terrible conditions before they could get Aud up, and moved to the clinic. It was once they were at the clinic though that he’d really seemed to have run directly into a cold anger, yelling at anyone who wasn’t needed to get the hell out of his fucking clinic room, and telling those who could help to stay the fuck put. Thankfully, in the end, after his blow up, after his cold and violent anger had started to fade away, the setting of bones, the blasting of spell after restorative spell had been quick, had been easy. In fact, he was almost completely certain they’d be out of the forest before long. Regardless, he stayed by her, sticking in the room, and pacing back and forth at the end of the bed unable to sit. She’d wake up eventually, she would… She had to. She did. She still felt cold. Pulling the blankets closer to her, Audrey opened her eyes. Her memory was slowly coming back. She took a couple of quiet seconds staring at the ceiling before realizing where she was and what had happened. Those elementals, they had appeared out of nowhere. There was just too many and, “Darius,” she called out. Her eyes dropped realizing she wasn’t the only one in the room. A smiled pulled at her lips at who it was. “I,” she struggled with her words, trying to construct a sentence. Anything. “Thank you.” With his name mentioned, the mage’s attention instantly snapped up and over to where the voice had come from. Audrey was awake, or well.. She was speaking at least. Was she awake? It took a moment, but a few quick steps made short distance from where he was to the side of the bed she’d been put in. “Yeah, I’m here.” A hand dipped down, moving to take one of hers in his own. “Nothin’ to thank me for.” A soft squeeze of her hand was given, careful not to move or jar her too much so that no additional pain would be stirred. “How’re you feeling?” Audrey flinched, trying to grin through the pain. “Sore,” everywhere. Audrey tried to roll on her side, but pain shot through her body again and she kept still. Instead she moved the white mage’s hand to her cheek, feeling his soft skin against hers. Looking down she saw her arm wrapped. It was broken. “So,” she looked up with minor concern in her eyes. “What damage did I rack up this time?” Another sheepish smile took its place on her lips. “Pretty bad.” His voice was more solemn than Darius even really cared for it to be in the end, but it was what it was, and in the end, she still - in a sense - was a patient more than his…. person he was dating. Though, it was hard to make that distinction sometimes. Right now though, even with the feeling of her cheek against his hand, even with how it was killing him inside to see her laid up in bed like this, even with…. “Broken ribs, broken leg, broken arm. Lots of hairline fractures that didn’t need setting. Gashes. You know, standard battle stuff.” A pause. “You shouldn’t go out alone, yeah?” Generally, he was quite good at keeping his tone schooled, but now he couldn’t help the worry that had seeped in. “It was an accident,” she was quick to defend herself, and in all truth it had been. The ninja had a great dislike for things that couldn’t physically be beat to death. Magic wasn’t exactly her strong suit, or at least she had no knowledge of how to use it. “There’s a place outside Emillion I use for target practice, and well, a golem showed up out of nowhere and the next thing I know I keep running into more and more things. Fleeing from one battle would only lead me to another, and well sometimes I was just unlucky with how fast some of them were.” Lying there she realized how truly weak she was. They said experience came with age, but she felt she couldn’t wait that long. “Had we always been attacked this much? Maybe I don’t remember because I was a kid, but with things like this. I mean the attack on the Mage’s Tower wasn’t that long ago, was it?” “Didn’t say it was anyone’s fault.” Darius cooly pointed out, not seeming angry about what happened, but undoubtedly worried. Audrey was an adult, and one that didn’t commonly get herself beaten to a bloody pulp on a regular basis - damn fighters - so he had to think this was more of an anomaly than not. Now, if that changed he probably wouldn’t be nearly as cool as he felt right now in the future. Though, her next question caught him off guard a bit, and Darius had to frown. “No.” He shifted, giving her hand a very soft squeeze in hopes to not hurt her more. “I don’t think we did.” Admittedly, they were around the same age, so his recollection may not be a lot better than hers but… He didn’t recall his dad fighting so close to home growing up. The battles always seemed far away, and that was what had made them frightening before, but this… Well, it brought a whole new type of horror to their reality that he was beginning to wonder if it would be worse the longer they went. Audrey had frowned interlacing their fingers and tightening her grip. She dropped her gaze down as if contemplation about the current situation. “My sister is making class in aeries,” she admitted after some time, her worries shining through. “I avoid fights. I only fight when I know it’s in my favor. She’s not going to do that. Fighters are like that, aren’t they.” It wasn’t really a question, she knew as much as he did. “Do I have to stay here tonight?” Honestly, what could he say to her about her sister? There was nothing he could do to console her, nothing he could do to bring her spirits up, nothing that wouldn’t be straight out lies at least. Instead, his voice became more solemn, and perhaps a bit regretful. “Yeah, they do that.” It was part of why he’d become the man he was really. A foolish attempt at trying to make sure they came back alive more often than not. Darius’ fingers curled around her’s, a brief nod of his head given before he spoke. “Yeah, think you’ll be good to go tomorrow.” A beat fell as the mage seemed to mull over something. “I can stay with you if you want.” Audrey's frowned deepened at his words. She pulled his hand to her cheek again. It was his final sentence that brought her spirits up. Her eyes lifted and her expression softened. "I'd like that." “Alright.” And the decision was made with a simple nod of his head. Glancing over to one side, his free hand would grab at a chair, pulling it close enough so that he could sit beside her bed without having to let go of her hand. “I’ll watch over you, yeah? Get some rest.” With that, Darius would sit down, settling in for a long night while holding Audrey’s hand, and leaning his head against the edge of her bed. |
