The morning had been thus far uneventful in Theo’s eyes. While the burden of his current caseload continued to weigh heavy upon his shoulders, as well as other more personal affairs, these hours at the EKP offices were spent engaged in the familiar rituals of processing paperwork. Reports to file, evidence to record, meetings to attend, he had gone about them all with perhaps more force than usual (though one who did not know the berserker well might only see his scowl as business-as-usual). A cup of coffee in one hand (thankfully of a higher quality than the burnt offerings at the courthouse, where his brother resided during the same hour), and a folder of papers in the other, the tall and imposing figure stomped through the rows of desks, stopping in his tracks only to catch a peculiar figure lingering around Monaco’s desk. Theo grunted and looked around, wondering where the man might’ve gone off to--and why a squire had planted himself in Monaco’s place. “More changes,” he grumbled thoughtfully, giving the boy a speculative glance. Seeing Theo’s shadow fall over the desk, Pyr froze, thinking he had been caught slacking. The folders piled up in front of him all had case numbers scribbled on the covers, and it was his unfortunate job to sort out which folders contained information on the same case and place them in neat categories. Jareth had left him to it almost a full ten minutes ago, and he’d spent the last five scrutinising the chickenscratch on the covers with what he deemed to be a thoughtful expression and stroking his chin while he let his mind wander into other far more interesting subjects, such as the prank he and Sky were planning and what he’d be eating for lunch. Fortunately for him, it was not his mentor who had interrupted, but Juliette’s. Pyr had seen him around the guildhalls and in the kitchens a few times, never looking particularly cheerful, and they had never interacted (unless one counted the times Pyr had sent cookies meant for Juliette to the Finch estate). He hoped that, if Finch had noticed he was slacking, he wouldn’t tell Jareth, but he didn’t seem the talkative type so perhaps it would be okay. “I started helping out here yesterday,” Pyr said. “You’re EKP too, right? Sir?” "Aye," Theo replied, matter-of-fact. He recognized the squire's face from around the guildhalls, but beyond had little knowledge about the boy was or that he'd apparently been picked as Monaco's new charge--or something to that effect at least, as he doubted the man entertained the company of youths otherwise. He grumbled to himself at the recollection of how he had been assigned Juliette so many months ago (not that it hadn't benefited them both). Tall as he was, it didn't take much in the way of effort to loom over Monaco's desk to see all of what the boy was busying himself with. Perhaps, he thought to himself, that his colleague (a term less begrudging than usual) had similar thoughts on giving out tasks to eager squires--and his observations seemed to prove as much here. "Troubles?" Planted in place, as if to inspect his progress (or simply caught in distraction for a brief moment, noting another unusual shift in the office beyond that of Siana's now absence), Theo took a sip of his coffee and appeared to wait for an explanation. Pyr fished out two folders with different case numbers written on them. “Uh. These two were kinda jumbled together and I think some of the documents inside might have got mixed up. I was going to check, but Jareth told me not to look in the folders.” He held the folders out to Theo―he had offered to help, after all―and then as an afterthought, added, “I’m Pyr Min, by the way. Juliette’s friend? I sent cookies to your estate a couple of times.” With a sniff of a sigh, Theo made his way around to the other side of the desk, placing his own personal effects aside and reaching for the folders in question. "Give a look," he said, apparently willing to offer a hand and regardless of his seemingly ever-constant mood (no unusual habit it was for a berserker, all told). While the boy may not have had permission to look through these folders, Theo seemed well at ease perusing their contents. His large, calloused hands flicked through the papers, gathering up those that seemed out of place and moving them around as needed. Perhaps he shouldn't have involved himself so readily, and if Monaco made a sudden appearance, one might only guess if the two peacekeepers would exchange words about it. But the responsibility was taken up easily regardless, and his gaze moved down to the boy after a time. "I recall," he said, eyes lit with a new hint of recognition as pieces of a puzzle now fell into their proper places. Theo tried to recall if ever he had seen the squire give Juliette any strange sort of looks while in his presence (he continued to have his own deductions about that). "See her around of late?" He might've stopped himself from asking, but when it came to the matter of his own squire... It almost felt as though he was being interrogated, but Pyr figured it was probably just Finch’s gruff manner (practically a requirement for Berserkers, in his experience). He shrugged. “Yeah, pretty often. We spar at least once a week but sometimes I end up on kitchen duty when she is. We take some classes together, too.” He watched Finch move papers from one folder to the other and had to make an effort not to preen that his suspicions had been right. "That so," he said, Theo's suspicions remaining his own for the time being as he looked back down to the folders in his hands. While he certainly was not Juliette's older brother, the tone of his voice might've proven similar enough. (And whether or not he would prod her about the matter again as well seemed a rumination best left for another day and another circumstance.) He handed the materials back to the squire, content enough now to allow Pyr to add them to the rest. His hands roamed back to his coffee and his own case folder, but he did not immediately turn to leave. Theo ground out a handful of thoughts, settling eventually on: "Ought to see more of you around here, with Monaco?" So he should prepare for such a change, and its potential permanency if so. The world, or more specifically his own small sphere of life, had a habit of altering drastically of late, and showed no apparent signs of relenting. Adjustment as necessary then, taking things as they came. The subject of Juliette seemed to have been dropped easily enough, and the frown was one of Finch’s distinguishing characteristics so Pyr pushed it out of his mind. He placed the two folders in their respective piles and nodded. “I think this is going to be a regular thing for me from now on, so I’ll be around on weekday mornings for a couple of hours I guess.” He gave Finch a grin―better to get on well with everyone around, now that he was going to be a permanent fixture around the EKP offices. “Thanks for helping me out, Lord Finch!” "Aye," Theo said with a shrug, "Good luck with the work." For this particular man, it might very well have been counted as a warm and friendly encounter--more or less. With a grunt as farewell, he began his journey back through the offices and to his own tasks once again. Perhaps this change, he thought, would prove better than some of the rest. |
