Mathieu had worked long and hard into the evening, going the rounds of his favorite late night spots, rubbing elbows and making sure to be seen. One could easily mistake his social engagements for private amusement, and truth be told that he was fond of blurring any firm lines between the two, but he knew well his place in the scheme of things. It was no easy task, he often thought, to keep others smiling, to keep the wine flowing gracious, the band playing ever on, and of course, to see that coins easily changed from one hand to the next. He'd been roused early that morning regardless of his long evening, prodded into action by the rest of the Rozenkatz brood to attend Sunday mass. Brothers and sisters afforded him the usual skeptical glances, demanding to know where he had gone, what petty bard's business he had been dealing (and he might sing for hours if they had only the ears to listen and understand the importance of his tasks), and making sure he looked acceptable to be seen with at the Grande Cathedral. By the time all was finished, the youngest Rozenkatz boy had called upon on the family's drivers and made a hasty escape elsewhere. After all of this excitement, he had eventually found himself stopping at the Blue Wren. It was a conveniently located little business, on his way from one place to the next, and the councilman was noted to be seen her from time to time. And he made sure never to shirk pleasant company. Mathieu had positioned himself at a large open table near the windows, spreading out a mass of the day's paperwork and ordering the waitress back and forth for fresh coffee and whatever on the menu had caught his eye. Embracing the decadence of noble life wherever he appeared, he made himself comfortable and looked up from time to time to catch sight of anyone familiar. After all, this close to the rest of the Theatre District, it wasn't unusual to run into guild mates. Mathieu planned to conquer brunch, his paperwork, and spread as much cheer as he could before moving on to his next battle of the day. |
