Though it had been delayed, the gala proved the age-old adage: the show -- and life -- would go on, one way or another. Perhaps there were collection baskets around for the newest relief effort, but the atmosphere was still merry. The cavernous hall had been decorated in opulent style, from the massive trees lighting up every corner down to the festive tablecloths and frosted candle holders on each table. Appetizers were passed and the attendees were left to mingle and socialize until finally, the suited ushers directed the audience to be seated. Soup and salad were served as the heavy red velvet curtain rose. The show progressed with music and dance, applause and laughter. At intermission, the main course was served before the curtain rose once again on the second act. Just as it seemed the show was over and thunderous applause rose, the performers ceased their bows to stream down the sides of the stage and into the audience, a handful stopping at every table. The orchestra struck up the first strains of a familiar carol and the conductor turned and encouraged the audience to join the chorus in an encore. When the dimmed lights once again came up, it would appear that dessert tables had sprung up at the edges of the room, as if by magic. It seemed this evening -- thank Faram, peaceful to the end -- would end in sweets and merriment. |
