It was awful not being able to discern dream from reality, and Merri had long since given up trying. Images of Weynn hovering over him, the monster from the docks, the monsters from the snowstorm, his dark and empty room, the demon doll from the Eve of the Holy Saints, and Wil bursting through his door to exclaim his return all swirled together, and sometimes the Wendices would be with Wil, and the doll would appear on Weynn's shoulder, and in his very room a flan would appear to attack him and Drake and Merri found himself completely helpless to act, for his magic no longer seemed to work -- these were the things that plagued him every minute of the day and night. So he barely registered it when the holy knights came into his room and lifted him on the gurney, and were it not for the quilts and blankets tucked around his body the shock of the cold might have brought him to reality quickly enough to protest what was happening. No, the only thought he could think was that perhaps he had died after all, and his only relief was that he had been able to write home one last time. Maybe he had been able to see Drake and Wil again, maybe he did not, but when he woke again, he saw the face of Father Lucini above him, and he heard the groans of many other sick people all around him.
