After his meeting with Councilor Min, Guy fought off his lingering urge for a cigarette long enough to remember his other important task of the day: finding Merri and catching up properly. Having been in and out (mostly the latter) of the city for the better part of a month, it was obvious that he needed to begin to form some sort of order to his life once again. This would be a good place to start. Fortunately, Merri’s office wasn’t so far a distance from the one he had just departed from. Shaking the remnants of his previous conversation from his mind, he wandered the distance from one Councilor’s door to another. Guy rapped his knuckles on the door and hoped that he hadn’t already wandered elsewhere. After all, if the other mage was sick, he may have just decided to stay holed up in his quarters. “You in there, Merri?” Merri jumped at the knock, his mind having been elsewhere. He'd done nothing but stare at the stack of papers before him all morning, and every time he tried to take pen to paper he found his mind turning into a haze of blurry words and memories that he didn't want to remember. Some were good memories, which made the ache in his heart less dull, and some were more recent, which nearly reduced him to tears. As such, he hadn't been able to get anything done, and he'd already been sitting here for more than a couple of hours, now. He stood from his desk to pull open the door, half expecting to see either Peony or Toku, but surprise dawned on his face momentarily before he remembered that Guy had said he'd drop by so they could go together to pick up potions. With a grin, small as it was (though as big as Merri could manage), he said, "Guy! It's so great to see you! I'm glad you made it back to Emillion safely." “Still in one peace,” he proclaimed, “but I’ll save the sordid tales of my travels for later! How’ve you been? Are you feeling better?” It all came out in one excited rush, as Guy’s usual amount of energy came surging back. He pat the other man on the shoulder and looked him over. Maybe it appeared as if he hadn’t been sleeping very well, but Merri didn’t look too worse for wear. That smile wasn’t quite as cheery as it usually was, but Guy wasn’t going to mention it--at least just yet. Instead, he allowed his own grin to warm at the sight of a friend long missed. Stepping inside the room, he peeked over Merri’s shoulder to his desk. “I haven’t caught you in the middle of something important, have I?” Merri shook his head, stepping aside to let Guy in. "No, not... really." I don't think. In truth, Merri didn't even know what the paperwork on his desk was for, but certainly it had to be the more mundane business items; if it was anything truly pressing, he wouldn't be working on it alone. Still, he hoped Guy wouldn't ask for the particulars. "I've been... okay, though." The word came out forced. "I... don't think I'm contagious, at least." A lie: he knew he wasn't, but feigning illness seemed a much safer option than the truth. Guy scratched his chin. Apparently he had arrived back to the city at a good time, for the more Merri spoke, the more it made him speculate. “Well now, that’s good isn’t it? We won’t be leaving any pertinent work behind for our jaunt out to the city!” Whatever affliction had befallen his friend, it couldn’t be anything that a good walk outdoors and a trip to the clinic couldn’t solve. As much as Guy was loathe to wander near such places of his own will, having some manner of accompaniment would do well to distract him. Buying potions was a necessity, he reminded himself, and it would be good to see how Cy’s former place of employment was faring in her absence. Reminding himself of the other synergist prickled his own nerves faintly, but he blissfully ignored it. “Better to bring a jacket or a cloak,” he said, looking around for either item. “It’s going to be a brisk walk, I’d say.” "R-right," Merri nodded, grabbing the jacket from the hook behind the door. He always kept one in here; though his room wasn't too much further away, it was a great time-saver around the lunch hour, especially this time of year. Once he pulled it and the scarf and gloves he also kept in his office on -- it might not yet be cold enough for a hat, maybe -- he gave a small smile to his friend. "Let's go," he said, trying to put some cheer in his voice. He doubted it came across well, however. Merri led the way out of the office and towards the waystone. Guy suffused their walk to the waystone with an abundance of cheerful chatter, eager to lift the other mage’s mood as best he could. Once they had finally found themselves in front of Cormac’s clinic however, it was then that he took a moment of his own for pause and reflection. While he often avoided going to clinics and healers whenever possible, this was not the only matter than caused him concern now. It had only been a scant number of days since Cy’s recent departure, and the synergist found himself more conflicted on the event than he’d ever wagered. Taking on a student had allowed an unexpected bond to form (one that came at Guy entirely by surprise) and it was one that had grown steadily over the past several months. Now, in her absence, the world seemed all the more askew. Guy scratched at his beard and looked thoughtful. “Well now,” he said, stalling, “here we are then. Do you wager we’ll need to wait long?” Merri was a little surprised when they arrived at the clinic. He hadn’t been paying much attention to his surroundings -- it was hard to care about the possibility of a chocobo trotting past right now -- so coming upon the building now gave him some pause. At Guy’s hesitation, he frowned. “I… maybe not?” He didn’t know yet if Cormac had found a replacement for Cy or not, and it was with this thought that he felt a queasy feeling grow in his stomach. Cy. Merri had also liked her, of course, but he knew that she and Guy were closer, and he couldn’t imagine what Guy must be going through. But at least she’ll be back someday, he thought sadly. “Are you okay?” he asked. “Why wouldn’t I be?” Guy countered blithely, perking up visibly at the hint that another might’ve caught on to his hesitations. Shoving away the inconveniently dour thoughts of healers and departing students, the synergist tacked on the most innocuous smile he could concoct and gestured to the clinic before them. “It’s just potions, after all. And the quicker we are to get things sorted, the more time we’ll have to spend at our leisure!” He rested one hand on Merri’s shoulder as a reassurance. “Shall we, then?” Merri couldn’t help but to feel that maybe he’d said something wrong, but perhaps he had simply been mistaken. Was he trying to project his own loneliness onto his friends? He wasn’t sure if he was okay with himself for doing that. So instead he bashfully nodded and said, “Yes, let’s.” |
