As time continued, seasons changed moving easily through the cool of fall into the cold of winter. Yet, the weather had held out mostly fine until a particularly vicious cold snap that had settled into the fine city of Emillion just earlier this very day. Steam from each person’s breath haunted the air, permeating out from them like a ghost. This would drive many citizens into their homes, and other establishments, if it were for work, enjoyment or simply distraction from the type of cold that would work its way into your bones if you were allowed too much time stuck out in it. Unfortunately, some were not afforded such simple reprieve as the gate guards still had shifts to attend to, and others who had volunteers or been assigned, remained keeping watch over various parts of the city as well. One thing they would be blessed with, would be silence. With such a drastic snap of cold, there was little interest for much of anyone to be on the streets, and crime of course settled down for at least that day. It seemed all in all, things would remain calm and peaceful as a light drift of snowflakes began to waft slowly down upon the city. Or so they thought. The first problem began when the slow and steady fall of snow did not abate after the period of a few hours. Instead, it simply increased, the snow falling faster, heavier, in bigger flakes to the point that it was beginning to become hard to see all that far in front of you. Then the winds began to whip wildly about, causing near howls as what little could be seen of the sun behind the clouds descended slowly towards the horizon, causing the chill to rise that much higher. If only those things were the exclusive problems. At the North gate, a guard would peer off into the clearly worsening storm, attempting to make out if there seemed to be any end in sight of it for their shift. That was when the man saw it, a strange hulking figure moving in the distance. Much larger than any Hume he’d ever seen. While attempting to figure out precisely what was coming towards them, slowly swaying from side to side as it walked in the storm which had severely hampered the guard’s vision some time ago, a call came in to the guard’s partner. There were muffled words for a moment, a normal enough seeming conversation at first. Though, that quickly would change to screams followed by a screeching roar, and the echoing ‘boom’ of some mammoth sized creature slamming against the walls of Emillion’s palings. “Sam,” The slowly swaying creature finally came into focus, a bladed shovel dragging across the snow covered but still rocky road producing an eerie scraping sound as more bangs against the palings could be heard not far from where the men stood. “I think we’re in trouble.” It would seem the storm had brought with it more than just snow. |
