What had possessed Kiernan to respond to the Mage Guild Councilor's job offer still eluded him. It wasn't that he was opposed to accompanying a couple of kids out into the wilderness or anything; he knew the Outlands as well as any Ranger, and where they were going was plenty safe. And he did need the money after last week's medical bills, but he didn't think he was that desperate as to jump at an opportunity to spend an afternoon with a bunch of mages, either. Ah, well, what was done was done, and he was here now, and he'd get paid in both gil and food. Furthermore, the councilor hadn't seemed at all opposed to Kiernan Manley, brother and outright bully to the missing Elwen Manley, taking them out, for which Kiernan knew he had to count his lucky stars.
Or, maybe, the councilor was intent on torturing Kiernan somehow. As much as he dreaded this possibility, he knew that he could not argue that he deserved it.
He arrived at the south gates at a quarter to the hour spear in hand and in his armor, surprised to see Sister Felicity already there waiting. Apparently she had answered the councilor's call, too, and Kiernan had to admit that he wasn't opposed to more help and a pretty face. Before too much longer, a group of four mages arrived: two kids and the two adults to chaperone them.
Kiernan couldn't help but to smile at the younger -- and the far prettier -- of the two adults, though the older one was clearly of the appropriate age to know who he was by surname alone, which made him bristle. He was soon floored to learn, however, that it was the pretty one who was the councilor and not the older one. Once the introductions were made, they set off through the south gates and into the woods.
They trekked for about half an hour. When he wasn't talking about the woods they traveled through and giving advice on how to know when danger neared, Kiernan chatted up Councilor Min in as a professionally casual manner as he could manage while receiving icy stares from the older mage, Marta. Every time he locked eyes with her, which wasn't very often, the hairs on his arms and legs stood on end. He tried not to think of Elwen in these moments but it was impossible not to, and certainly, she was thinking the same thing.
But even though these parts of the woods were relatively safe, it was not a situation where he could let himself dwell on his buried past for too long. In that moment, he thought he heard the shrubs rustle, but it died quickly. Still, it meant they were getting close to where humes rarely traveled enough that territorial wolves might emerge to keep intruders away.
"And now, it's best we stay on our guard," he said, casting one more wink in Councilor Min's direction.
