LEON & CARTER
So he'd gone for a run.
WHAT: a run in and tbd
WHERE: Sidewinder State Park
WHEN: Late Night/Early Morning September 7/8
WARNINGS: TBD
STATUS: Incomplete

Carter was..itchy. He didn't know how else to explain it. He was hearing Kelly's voice more often, seeing him present in reflective surfaces. He wasn't..feral, but he certainly wasn't entirely grounded. Luke's presence had been a big help, but Carter also knew it wasn't fair for either of them to depend solely on the other. He didn't want Luke to think he only wanted him around to keep him sane. He had to find other ways to cope. Mark had been busy with other things, and Carter hadn't wanted to intrude, and while he probably could have messaged the other werewolves, he didn't think that he was at a point that he was a danger to anyone. Except maybe himself. His eyes flashed purple in the mirror, and honestly- he thought it would be longer, thought that he'd be able to fight off the Omega pull. So he'd gone for a run. He'd made his way out to the state park, stripping his clothes and only barely folding them before tucking them among the roots of a tree a little ways off the path. His bones cracked as he transformed, unable to help the howl as he started off on a long, long run.

Carter would have laughed if he was human, but he- well, did his best approximation of an eyeroll. Backing up, he jumped off the trail and behind some low growth. He didn't hear the man running, and he transformed, bones cracking as he returned to his human form.

"Not a bother, but, uh- did you mess with my clothes?" He was half behind a tree, leaning out. With someone he knew, he would have just walked over to pick up his stuff, but he wasn't really an exhibitionist and didn't want to offend a stranger. "Could you toss 'em this way?"

Leon was about to breathe a sigh of relief when the wolf jumped away into the bushes, but imagine his surprise when he heard a human voice call out in the dark and a man’s face pop out from behind a tree? He blinked, startled, then annoyed at himself for letting yet another Dunwich oddity to get one over on him.

“Gimme a break… A werewolf?” A man was a lot less fearsome than a wolf, and Leon’s hand finally moved away from his knife.

“I didn’t mess with your clothes, I was looking for an ID. I thought something might have happened to someone.” He explained as he grabbed the clothes from the ground and threw them over to the stranger.

“Sorry if I interrupted your, uh… whatever it is you’re doing out here.”

"Don't tell me you didn't know werewolves were around here- there's an entire pack that runs every full moon," Carter called out, catching the clothes and taking a minute to pull his pants on before stepping out and pulling on his shirt.

"Just a run. It's easier sometimes, to get out of my head a little bit. Transform, go for a run. But the clothes can't- they don't transform, and why waste a perfectly good pair of clothes when I can set them aside?"

He crossed over to where his clothes had been, and he bent down for his boots, sitting down to pull them on. "I'm Carter, by the way."

“Yeah, I mean, I heard about there being werewolves,” Leon explained, keeping his gaze politely averted while the other man got dressed. “But… it's still ‘seeing is believing’ for me, I guess.” After making friends with vampires and fighting giant monster spiders you’d think he’d be more open minded, but apparently not.

“I’m Leon.” He offered a sort of half smile once it was safe to look. “Just regular old human Leon Kennedy. Nice to meet you.”

“I take it you’re not a local?” Natives to Dunwich all seemed kind of bland, like extras on a movie set. Forgettable.

"Well, we exist. Hi." Carter finished tying his boots and pushed himself up to his feet. "Nice to meet you, Leon Kennedy. I didn't expect to see anyone out here tonight- it's kinda late, isn't it?"

He fished in his pocket, pulling out his phone to check the time. Yeah. He definitely didn't expect to see anyone else out- he'd been running longer than he thought.

"Nope, not at all. Just got here..a couple weeks ago? I lost count. Long enough to start figuring things out. Find the good places to run." He blinked. "Are you?"

A shoulder lifted in a shrug. “I’m kind of a night owl.” It sounded kind of like an excuse, but oh well. Leon hadn’t always been up and about at all hours, it was a recent development, one he took no pride in. He much rather be sleeping.

“Nope. Been here since June.” Which was long enough to have experienced quite a bit of crazy shit, yet still not long enough for him to feel like he figured anything out. Leon was starting to think he never would.

“Just thought I’d come out here for a run. Sort of banking on things being calm for a little bit after Vecna… What do you think, are these woods safe enough?” Vecna proved you could be killed just as easily in your own home than running around at night by yourself. There was no point in playing it safe, if you were going to get got then it was going to happen to matter what you did.

"Nothing wrong with that. Everybody's different." Leon sounded like he didn't want to admit it, and Carter didn't know why. But it didn't really matter to him- he wasn't gonna judge.

He nodded. "Keep an eye out for vampires and don't get too close to the lake and you'll probably be okay. You know how to protect yourself with the feral vampires?"

Carter hadn't run into any vampires, thankfully, but he figured as a wolf he'd probably be okay. At least, he hoped he'd be able to sense a vampire before one was on him.

He tucked his phone back in his pocket, looking down before his gaze returned to Leon. And then- on the path behind him stood-

"..Kelly?"

Vampires. Leon couldn’t help but let out a breath of a laugh. Seemed like his social life since coming to Dunwich was nothing but getting tangled up with vampires. What had his life become? Zombies and vampires and werewolves, oh my!

“I think I should be able to handle it if I bump into one, I’m not too worried.” Hm. Saying that made him feel like he was coming off as a cocky braggart. Self conscious, he was compelled to add, “I’ve actually been doing some combat training with a vampire the past couple of weeks. You might know him if you’ve been to the Todash. He’s the bouncer there.”

He was talking, but it didn’t look like Carter was listening. Leon saw him stare at something behind him, and turned to look too, his brow furrowed. There was no one there, yet Carter addressed the nothingness as ‘Kelly’. “Um…?”

Arching a brow, he glanced back at the werewolf. “You okay?”

"That's well and good, but I've been told the native ones are too far gone- you might not have the time to react if you ran into one." He'd smelled what he thought might be a few while running- they smelled of death and blood, that sharp, metallic smell of their meals. Carter shook his head a little.

The image of his brother smiled, and Carter took half a step back. Then Leon spoke, and Carter blinked, looking back at him. "I- do you not see him behind you? That's- it looks like my brother, but that isn't him. And I don't know why he keeps showing up."

“Well, aren’t you optimistic?” Leon quipped dryly. If feral vampires were too quick for a human to react in time, then he’d just be fucked, wouldn’t he? No use in worrying about it, he had enough on his plate as it was. He’d go out fighting either way, no doubt about that.

Leon stared hard into the dark, but all he could see were the shadowy trees lining the path. “No… There’s no one. I don’t see anybody.” Great. The town had just gotten free of Vecna and already something else was out there fucking with people’s heads. Leon scowled and took a cautious step back from the empty space behind him, just in case.

“...What is it doing? Just standing there?” Blue eyes bounced back and forth between Carter and the invisible brother thing that might or might not actually be there.

"Realistic," Carter replied, falling quiet. Great. Leon didn't see him, which meant he was seeing things again. Groaning, he brought his hands up, fingers pressing into his eyes.

"Yeah, just standing." He sighed. "It's- I know it isn't him. I've been hearing his voice, though. And he keeps showing up- usually in mirrors or windows. This is the first time I've seen him just..here."

Leon was wary, but not afraid. He might have been forced to believe in zombies, vampires, werewolves, killer interdimensional psychics and giant spiders, but he still needed proof before accepting the idea of ghosts. There was nothing yet to indicate that what Carter was seeing existed anywhere outside of his mind.

“...Is your brother alive where you came from?” He was beginning to go into police investigation mode, asking questions. “What has he been saying when you heard his voice?” At first he had retreated, but now he drew closer to the spot where Carter seemed to be looking, reaching out a hand to wave back and forth to see if he could feel any difference in the air.

"Yes, he's alive." Carter huffed a little. He wasn't that crazy. "He's just been talking to me. Like he's trying to get my attention, or asking why I'm here and not coming home."

Like he had any control over that. He shook his head. "Further back. You're not quite there. He's rolling his eyes at you." Kelly's image stepped forward, seeming to pass through Leon. Carter yelped and stepped back. "Did you feel that? He walked right through you!

“Here?” Swinging his arm from side to side Leon felt nothing but the nightbreeze between his spread fingers. There was no resistance, no pocket of cold air. Nothing. Yet the werewolf yelped, looking like he was about to freak out.

Leon hummed thoughtfully. “...I don’t want to say I don’t believe you, but… It sounds almost like your subconscious is acting up or something.” It made sense, Carter missed his brother and wanted to go home, maybe he was feeling guilty knowing his brother was probably worried about him, and so his brain was conjuring up images to go along with the feelings. Leon had seen things now and then too, a quick glimpse of a zombified Marvin reflected in a store window glass, stuff like that. Lack of sleep and a sprinkling of PTSD explained it away as far as he was concerned. Leon figured it was the same for Carter.

"I don't know about that," Carter replied. "I mean- don't believe me, that's fine. But I know what I'm seeing. Haven't you seen- or heard the others on the network?"

He didn't know what this guy had been up to around here, or what his background was, but he figured it was possible he could have missed the others having similar experiences. Besides- he'd been sleeping just fine. "You really haven't heard any voices? Seen things in reflections that shouldn't be there?"

It made him feel better to dismiss another possible happening then to involve himself, so Leon valiantly made a valiant attempt, shaking his head. "When are people not posting strange things on the network? It all sort of... blends together after a while."

Ah, but this game got a little harder when his own experiences came into question. Leon frowned in discomfort and began to fiddle with his flashlight despite it being in perfect working order. "If I have-- I doubt it has any connection to what's going on with you. I was in a pretty rough spot the night I ended up here, its only natural for something like that to stick with you..."

"Right. A skeptic." Carter rolled his eyes. He could sense Leon's discomfort- his scent changed slightly, and Carter didn't miss the way he fiddled with his light.

"Sure. You keep telling yourself that, pal." Carter checked his pockets- he still had everything on him, and he pulled out his phone. Oof. Late enough that he'd better be getting back before Luke woke up and found him gone. "See how long that works for you. I should probably head back before my friends think I'm missing."
