Jubilee & Thomas

This weekend | low

it tended to make people upset

There was probably a reason that skateboarding was still, in the year of 2025, frowned upon almost as much as it had been back in the mid 90s. It wasn't that it was a bad sport, not by any measure, or even that the people who did the sport were bad people.

It was just, well.

Skateboarders tended to hang out and linger in places that weren't really meant for them, and it tended to make people upset.

But how was it Jubilee's fault that the Dunwich public library had the best, most freshly paved cement in their parking lot? And on top of that there was almost never any traffic?

When she combined that smooth, smooth ride with the fact that she could do little ollies and tricks against the curb?

Heaven.

And when she caught a little speed? No one could stop her.

The only traffic that would get in Jubilee's way was Thomas himself.

She hadn't run into him, but as he was leaving the library, she had zoomed past him so fast, it had startled him, causing him to drop the books he'd been carrying and nearly toppling over. Thomas had made a rather disgruntled face as he realized what had scared the living daylights out of him. The sound of a skateboard was still relatively new to him, but he knew what it was, and who had been zipping around on it.

Dear lord, he was turning into one of those cranky old people, wasn't he? Shaking his fist at the youth and telling them to slow down?

Still, that skateboard did seem awfully dangerous.

"Careful!" Thomas had called out after Jubilee as he bent down to collect his scattered books.

"Sorry!" Jubilee called back -- feeling only slightly sorry at best, if she was being honest -- but that didn't stop her leaning back on the board to turn around and do a full stop all at once.

She was a hero after all, not some kind of teenaged delinquent, even if there wasn't much hero-ing to do in Dunwich as of late. Or ever, frankly. She could at least help the stuffy (but hot) librarian pick his pile of books up.

"You always take your work home?" she asked teasingly even as she knelt down to help pick half the errant stack up.

"I do, I'm afraid," he spoke, his irritated expression already softening. He hadn't expected Jubilee to come help him and found it awfully kind that she had. "I never realized what a workaholic I was until I came here to Dunwich."

He had been this way back in 1901 as well. It always the clay mines or tinkering in his workshop or sketching new ideas. He rarely ever stopped to relax.

None of the books that Thomas had dropped were fiction, though there was a book on magic that might have been viewed as fiction by some. For Thomas, it was research.

"You're quite brave to be speeding around on that thing," he spoke, nodding towards the skateboard, "You must practice quite a bit to be so good at it."

"And you keep it up even after realizing it?" Jubilee asked with a tsk, even as she rose an eyebrow over the magic book. Curious, but not weird for this place.

Frankly, neither was being a workaholic. A lot of people in Dunwich seemed to subscribe to the concept of constant work -- which was, she thought, a bit silly. If there was any time to take a bit of a mental vacation, it was in a place outside of your real life. At least, that was the excuse she often made when she felt too lazy, or like she wasn't living up to her actual potential.

"It's not so hard, once you get a hang of it," she went on, shaking her head. "And it's fun, you know? Wind in your -- well. Hey, wanna give it a go?"

Thomas gave a shrug at Jubilee's observation. He wasn't sure if he could be anything else other than a workaholic, even if he tried.

But maybe he just wasn't trying hard enough. He looked at the skateboard, a little uncertain, but he didn't seem entirely uninterested, either. "I'm not sure that I have the balance for it."

He still found a bench to set his books down so that he could take a closer look. "Can I just.. stand on it for a moment?"

"That's giving it a go," Jubilee said encouragingly. Because even standing still on something that had four wheels was something of an effort; a start to learning.

"And balance just takes practice." She was nothing if not a cheerleader for those trying new things. "Lemme know if you need a hand for help."

Thomas honestly kind of expected to topple over the moment he stepped onto the skateboard, but to his surprise, he didn't. He wobbled a bit, but after a second or two, he was able to stabilize himself, his pose accidentally close to something correct.

He huffed out a laugh, looking at Jubilee. "Alright - what's next?" He knew he needed to place his foot down in order to make the skateboard move, but he wanted Jubilee's advice before he tried taking off.
