WHO: Sage Steele
WHEN: Tuesday, October 31, 2017; Morning
WHERE: Java Chip Cafe
SUMMARY: Sage gets the wrong latte and has to make a new game plan.
WARNINGS: TW: Counting calories. IDK that it’s super triggery in this exact context, but I’m putting it here, just in case.
If there was one reason for Sage to be excited for Alex’s upcoming wedding, it was that she could look forward to two weeks afterward where she would have more responsibility in the office. She had never been a huge advocate for the concept of marriage--the only one she had to base her opinions on was that of her parents and, if people actually knew what that marriage really looked like, they would understand her reticence. It wasn’t that she never wanted to get married, it was just that she knew the importance of not only being smart about it, but also making certain that she was at a point in her life that, if it didn’t work out, she still had her own life separate from the other person. She wondered, sometimes, if her mother would have left her father by now if her livelihood wasn’t entirely dependent on the moods of Sage’s dad. Still, she was happy for Alex and she was happy that his happiness meant a chance for her to make an even better impression while he was away. Every day counted, as far as she was concerned, until she graduated and secured her own place as partner in an architecture firm. That was why she’d woken up extra early that morning to run by the coffee shop to work on her sketches for class so that she’d have no obligation that afternoon besides her internship. As her pencil scratched against the latest page in her sketchbook, Sage picked up her latte and took a sip and almost immediately spit it out. She’d asked for skim milk and this was undoubtedly whole. She was torn between asking the barista to make a new drink and not wanting to be that person who made a big deal over something that likely wouldn’t matter as much to normal people. Maybe it would, but she’d never been normal enough to make assumptions with any certainty. She sighed and mentally calculated the difference in calories between the whole milk and skim and the merits of either drinking or doing without her morning coffee drink. If she drank the entire thing, it would be close to an extra 150 calories and probably more than 20 grams of fat, give or take. She frowned at it and then sighed, turning slightly in her chair to dump the whole thing into the trash. It wasn’t worth it--if she drank it now, she’d feel bloated and tired for the rest of the day and she had too much to do to deal with that. Pulling out her phone, she texted Kolya. Meet you in the courtyard in a few. Have to stop for coffee first. She was sure he probably wouldn’t even notice that she was running late as he’d been distracted himself recently. She could pop into a different coffee shop and order a new latte without anyone knowing she’d had a problem with the first one. Then she’d meet Kolya and her day would continue as planned. Sage was nothing if not a sucker for things going exactly as she had planned them. |
