WHO: Dottie Darling
WHEN: Before they go to Universal, because I want her to be able to charm Honeydukes candies. ;)
WHERE: Magic Kingdom, Disney; Orlando, Florida
SUMMARY: Dottie finds her wand.
WARNINGS: None.
They never strayed far from one another at least in pairs. Though the original group of Disney-goers had expanded just slightly, Dottie thought it was really merrier with more people. They had been thoroughly enjoying showing Zoe Maxine every part of Magic Kingdom. While the rest of the group waited in line for a meet and greet with Goofy and friends, Dottie had snuck away with the promise of returning with sugary treats. She had been eyeing the shop all morning despite having not been drawn to it before on this trip. She had every intention of walking out with a truly ridiculous amount of confections. Personally, she had her eye on a candy coated pretzel rod, and a caramel covered apple that she hoped to persuade Duncan into sharing with her. She had waited patiently in line until it was her turn, silently calculating just exactly what she was going to purchase. “...yes, and then I would like one of the Minnie Mouse cookies...yes, that one. Perfect. Could I trouble you for the Mickey Mouse crispy pop with the Reese’s Pieces? Wonderful. Then, I’m going to get...why don’t we do one of each of the dipped pretzel flavors?” It didn’t seem to phase the salesman, which she was pleased about. As he dipped into the cabinet grasping with a gloved hand and parchment paper wrap, she tilted her head and leaned closer to the glass until the tip of her nose touched the case. “Um...ma’am?” She did not look up, “Yes?” “Do you see something else you would like?” “I do.” In fact, what she had seen wasn’t candy at all, though it was masquerading quite well as a pretzel. She wondered if applewood wands were known for being able to camouflage themselves well. Though it had been dipped and candied like all the others, the smooth handle lacked salt, and just the very edge of a tulip bud was visible, “I would like that beautiful one there.” She pointed into the case where it was tucked away, covered in M&Ms. The boy wrinkled his brows a little as he reached into the case and retrieved it, “Um...I don’t know that I can sell this one to you. I think it needs to be discarded. It must have gotten through the quality check somehow, but…” “Oh, that’s quite fine. I’ll take it anyway,” Dottie insisted with a luminous smile. “I don’t think it’s really a…pretzel, Miss.” The boy was looking more and more concerned by the moment. “No. Indeed it isn’t. But it is mine.” She said this slowly, trying not to be overly eager. “It’s...yours? Did you lose it?” He looked down at the wand wrapped in parchment paper and chocolate in his hands, trying to puzzle how she might have lost this object in whatever kitchen these treats were made. “I believe so. Some time ago. How it ended up here in the pretzels, I’m not quite certain.” “Well, I guess I should return it to you then. I can’t charge you for it, though. Sorry about the chocolate.” He extended the wand out to her over the counter rather than wrapping it up in the paper like all the others, “Never apologize for chocolate.” It was with no small amount of gratefulness and relief that Dottie reached out and grasped the end of her wand. The moment that her fingers wrapped around the end, warmth raced up her fingertips, straight to her heart. The casing of candy on the wand appeared to crack a little with a jump of vibrant pink sparks. A breeze picked up in the store, rustling all around her. It ruffled her hair and her clothes, making a few other patrons look around as if they might see something strange at the propped open doors of the candy store. The draw that she’d felt to the candy store was now more than apparent. She gave a happy sigh as she stuck the end of her wand in her mouth, nibbling on the chocolate as she continued her way down the line, “Oh! Yes, I’d like a caramel apple, please. The one with chocolate and rainbow sprinkles…” |
