Three nights in a row. That’s how long young Annabeth endured the nightly attacks of spiders sent by Arachne. At night, they would swarm her in her bed, finding a way to slip past whatever childish defenses she had tried to construct to stop them. She would scream and cry for her father, but he never came. The only person who answered was her step-mother, and the spiders would hide themselves away by the time she stepped into the room. She didn’t believe her, of course. And the painful bites from the spiders would always fade too quickly for the young Demigod to use them of proof. Evidence of her nightly torture. After the third night, Annabeth wouldn’t take it anymore. Her family didn’t believe her. And she was certain they didn’t care for her. So she’d just have to take care of herself. At seven years old, Annabeth packed some clothing and supplies into a backpack and she ran away. She left the only family she had ever known in search of ...something. Maybe a way to prove herself to her mother. Or maybe it was just an escape from the feeling of being unwanted. They were probably happier with her gone, she thought bitterly to herself at the end of each difficult day. She lived on the streets. Stealing food and necessities when she needed them, and fighting off monsters whenever she stayed still enough for them to find her. It would have been difficult for an adult, let alone a small girl on her own. But she was intelligent and resourceful. Her own talents mixed with help from Athena kept her alive on the streets those first few months. But it wasn’t sustainable. And even at her young age, Annabeth knew she couldn’t just keep going like this forever. Things changed for her one evening outside an ironworks building. She’d heard noises down the alleyway and hid herself, a hammer clutched tightly in her small hand. Every muscle in her body tensed, and when her hiding place was revealed, Annabeth launched herself forward with the fiercest yell she could muster. She ran straight at the taller of the two monsters and moved to hurl her hammer right at his head. Except...he wasn’t a monster. He was a demigod, like her. They both were. A boy of fourteen, and a girl of twelve. Luke and Thalia, both runaways like her. And after learning that she was a demigod as well, they invited her to travel with them. Luke looked her in the eyes and he promised to protect her. Promised that they would be a family. A better family than the one she’d left behind. As he gifted her with a bronze knife to protect herself, Annabeth felt something she hadn’t experienced in months. Hope. |
