The forest surrounded her, cool and dark. It was day time, but the thick trees filtered out the sunlight and left everything half bathed in shadows. Her feet crunched against fallen leaves and twigs that carpeted the ground in front of her, and her long, fine gown picked up dirt and bits of debris. 'We shouldn't be out here alone.' Melara's voice had an edge of fear to it, but young Cersei couldn't be bothered to care. She had a task to accomplish, and she wouldn't let Melara Hetherspoon's fright stop her. "Why not?" Cersei called back, refusing to look back at her friend. 'If your father hears-" Cersei shook her head and gave a practiced roll of her eyes. "He'll never know we're gone." As if Tywin Lannister ever really cared about where his daughter went. 'But if he finds out...' Tramping down on her annoyance, Cersei stopped and spun around. As she turned, a gentle smile graced her expression. She took Melara's hands in her own and gave her a knowing look. "You don't need to be afraid of my father." Melara seemed to accept this, and hand in hand, the two young girls made their way deeper into the forest. 'GET OUT!' Melara shrieked and jumped backward in fear as the fortune teller moved out of the shadows to yell at the two girls. They'd entered her home, deep in the forest, and while Cersei was uneasy with the place, she wouldn't leave until Maggy the Frog had revealed her future. She stared the woman down unflinchingly. "They said that you were terrifying," she retorted with a sneer. "With cat's teeth and three eyes. You're not terrifying. You're boring." 'You don't know what I am.' "I know you're a witch. And you can see the future." Young Cersei wasn't nearly as good at hiding her intentions as her older self would one day grow to be. "Tell me mine." 'Everyone wants to know their future, until they know their future.' "Tell me my future or I'll have your two boring eyes gouged out of your head." Cersei felt a swell of pleasure as the witch acquiesced and handed her a knife to draw some blood. She was a Lannister, after all. And very used to getting what she wanted. She pricked her thumb with the blade and allowed Maggy a taste. Her small, thin frame practically quivered with anticipation of her future. Her handsome Prince Rhaegar, becoming Queen, beautiful children... 'Three questions you get. You won't like the answers.' Even then, Cersei still held her head high. "I've been promised to the Prince. When will we marry?" 'You'll never wed the Prince. You'll wed a King.' Cersei's stomach had tightened, then gave an excited flutter. "But I will be Queen." 'Oh yes. You'll be queen, for a time. Then comes another. Younger, more beautiful. To cast you down and take all you hold dear.' It was then that Cersei's voice finally wavered. That hadn't been what she had been expecting to hear at all. She'd completely forgotten Melara by that point and had only eyes for Maggy. Her proud features dropped, allowing doubt to surface. "Will...will the king and I have children?" 'No. The King will have 20 children. And you will have 3.' Fire returned to her words then. "That doesn't make any sense." How dare this dirty, shabby, disgusting excuse of a woman tell her such nonsense. 'Gold will be their crowns. Gold, their shrouds.' Maggy's laughter rang in Cersei's ears as Melara finally dragged her out of the shack and back toward home again. At home in her bed, Avery's eyes flew open in the dark. She could still hear the witch's laughter and it chilled her. Her heart raced and there was a dull ache in her right thumb, as if the skin had been pierced by a blade. She touched it to make certain there wasn't any blood there. The clock read 4:30am. Her alarm would be sounding in half an hour, and Avery was positive she wouldn't be able to get back to sleep anyway. With a sigh, she gently sat up and eased herself out of bed so as to not wake her husband. As she moved through the darkness of the bedroom, Avery felt a tear slip down her cheek. A part of her had known she would likely experience these memories eventually, but she never expected...this. The overwhelming realness of it. The weight. Of all the people she might share memories with, it had to be her. She was Cersei Lannister. And it was only going to get worse from here. |
