Sometimes Ignatius wonders fleetingly whether he might, in fact, not after all be simply a victim of witchcraft. Whether instead of enlightened, liberated, remade into his truest self, he is merely the ensorcelled plaything of a wanton seductress and a pair of procuresses. Might he, instead of basking in sunlight and tapestries of colour, be grubbing in the muck with sheep and demons?
But when he listens closely, those whispered doubts carry the sibilant voice of the bishop. He fingers the rich, vibrant wool of his robe, and his eyes grow clear. It is all truth, and miracles are real.
