The light of the fire treated exhaustion kindly, and Susan’s worried musings, too. In the warm glow, Cara looked merely delicate rather than sickly, her loose honey-gold hair framing her thin face. She resembled her brother so much that sometimes Susan startled when she saw them together, though oddly she looked fiercer than Alec, always had. It was in the posture, Susan thought, and the eyes; a kind of steel to her blue-grey gaze, like armour.
That steel was softened now, turning to liquid heat beneath her.
Susan kissed lines across Cara’s milk-pale skin, invisible runes to keep her safe.
