Charlotte takes a walk with her old friend Elizabeth through the woodland to the west of Rosings Park. Charlotte knows it far better than Elizabeth but Elizabeth has her own memories of this place. They go slowly, catching up on news of children and sisters and parents.
“Now, tell me Charlotte, could you be happy coming here to live with Anne?”
Just as when Charlotte married Mr Collins, Elizabeth’s tone is full of crushing concern and it is clear Elizabeth again doubts Charlotte’s decision-making. Elizabeth would never choose this life for herself. But Elizabeth doesn’t know Anne as she does.
