At nine Saffron had found the meaning of her name in a library book. Her mother had been vague when the question was posed, talking of foreign lands and quickly lapsing into recollections of friends and parties.
When she spoke to her father his answer was a distracted observation that her mother had devised it and was so set upon her choice he dare not dissuade her.
She discovered exotic spices, delicate and demanding flowers that did not speak to her resilience. She delved deeper into the words, their structure and origin, and discovered herself in the precision and detail.
