On Friday evening, all Las Vegas locals with Alters in their minds are drawn, inexplicably, to the Passages Hotel. Upon arriving, however, it becomes clear that everything is not as it should be. The exterior of the rundown hotel is not as it was and, unbeknownst to casual passers-by, the world just beyond its doors seems to have changed along with it. Upon entering the double doors the change to the setting becomes complete. No longer does modern Las Vegas lurk outside the doors, no longer is the hotel a menagerie of doors to other places. No, the hotel has become the Paris Opera house, circa 1875, and with the change to the building comes a change to the guests. Every guest, upon stepping foot onto the sumptuous marble entryway, becomes - physically and/or metaphysically - the embodiment of their true selves. Perceived dragons sprout wings and breathe fire, dream princesses tread on glass slippers and secret fears are revealed for the world to see. Memories remain, but how much (or how little) remains beyond that is individual to each guest at this Masquerade. For, yes, it is a Masquerade. Music from 1875 fills the halls of the opulent Opera House, for that is the year, 1875, both within and without the Opera House doors. The Foyer is a place for conversation. Candles flicker in the chandeliers overhead, and drink and refreshment are available for those collected to mingle or talk in the quiet clusters of chairs off the main walk. For those preferring a more physical experience The Grand Staircase is where the dancing is located. Large and twisting, the room boasts four levels with nooks and crannies protected by thick, red velvet curtains for privacy. Lighting here comes from flickering candles, and there is little else for illumination. The orchestra is tucked away here somewhere, out of sight, but the rising music is loud enough that private conversations are possible. The Roof, offers a reprieve from the lights and the music, as well as an opulent view of Paris at night, and the Underground Lake leads guests down dark, haunted passages to the Phantom’s lair, offering privacy of a darker sort, for those so inclined. The effects of the evening last until morning, at which time everyone is returned to their normal state. Injuries obtained remain, memories of the evening do not disappear with the coming dawn. Alters in attendance are returned to their doors, and Las Vegas residents find themselves drawn back through the lobby of Passages, their attire whatever it was prior to arriving. |
