[...] Different. They tended to be a lot more aggressive and hyper masculine. There were a lot of misconceptions and perceptions that had to be maintained. Some would only come visit me if they were forced to, a lot wouldn't take meds, or they only wanted medications if they could high off them.
There was a lot of thinking outside of the box. You go to school for years and you learn about pharmacology and how to identify mental illness, how to teach coping methods and cognitive behaviors so that your patient can live a normal life, or as close to normal as is possible. But a lot of the men I saw in prison -- they weren't going to live a normal life. The objectives were different.
I was still an intern and it was extremely challenging.
