And let us all give thanks on this auspicious eve for that very special day, coming only once a year, which reminds the alone how very alone they are.

There is shame to be found in being alone?

There is loneliness to be found in it. And depending on the circumstances, shame can feel free to come along.

Loneliness has nothing to do with the presence of another, and shame is entirely of one's own creation, n'est-ce pas?

The definition of loneliness is the sensation of being alone. You can feel alone when you are with someone, but you are guaranteed to feel alone when there is no one else there.

It could be argued that shame is as much a creation of the society around one as it is one's own, but I see your point. Do you find it so easy to ignore shame?

It is sad, feeling so very alone. I would not wish this on anyone.

And yet there is a day to remind.

I couldn't agree with you more, and yet today is a day to celebrate those who already have found luck in love, and make those who haven't feel even more alone.

I thought I would bring some reality to the happy couple version of the holiday, so they think twice before tormenting their friends without thinking.

There are a lot of ways to not be alone. Friends, family, even crowds. In the same vein, you can be in a romantic relationship and still feel alone.

Or so I've been told.

Of course. But it is a possibility, not a guarantee. As for not feeling alone, no amount of friends or family can change the quiet shaming and silent laughter that society imposes on those who have no one to give one of the billion gifts at the store, or the romantic getaway on billboards.
