I miss you I think I might have messed things up with Jack and I'm going to let Bruce cross with

I think it'd be nice for Gus to have a yard to play in. Some of the pricier ones are nice, but the fourth one doesn't look bad, and it seems reasonable. [After a pause.] How've you been?

I'll be working too, and this one is in a good school district. It's a teensy bit more, though.

[That's all she types at first, and the rest is delayed.] I had lunch with Spencer.

Are you going back to Gardens? [...] That one's nice. Schools are important too. If it's a little more, that's okay. We can make it work.

[...] How did it go?

No. [...] I think I'll do private clients. Gardens schedules people for me throughout the night. I can't control it, and I don't make nearly as much as when I see a few clients on my own, ones that I check through a PI to make sure they're okay. [...] Just until you're on the force and we have more coming in, okay?

[...] Not good. I think he means well, but.

[A long pause, where the cursor just blinks and blinks.]

He asked why I didn't just tell Alexander no. Can you believe that? And [...] he doesn't know I know Falcon, and he doesn't know you're the same person. But he still came out and told me that Falcon killed people, Luke. He can't just go around saying that. [The typing is quicker by now, rushed.] What if he tells the wrong person? He just met me. He doesn't know that I won't go to the police with it, won't turn him in for knowing about murders.

[Long cursor blink as he thinks about this.] I don't like it, but okay. It's probably better than Gardens, and you have more control. Just [...] if it's not too much, can I have the name of your clients too? I won't do anything, I promise. I'd just like to look into them myself. I'm hoping all this training won't take too much longer, but me disappearing for days doesn't help. [...] Do you want to go look at the properties we like?

[Another cursor blink, and the phone switches to voice transcription. Typing and pacing is hard.] He said that? Really? No, I can't believe that. [Pause, which translates as a long cursor blink.] Okay. Okay, listen, he won't tell the wrong person. It'll be fine. No one can connect us, and no one will. He doesn't even know. I won't tell him. If the cops were going to pin some vigilante murders on me, Wren, they would've done it already. [...] He shouldn't be telling people that, no. But you won't go to the cops, and that means I have time to figure out a way to talk to him without making who I am obvious.

I knew you wouldn't, but I'm good at it, and we'll need the money, especially with Christmas coming. It's just for now. You can check them out for me, if you want. I don't mind. And with my rates, it means I only have to work a few shifts a week. I'd have to work full-time at Gardens to make the same thing. [...] Do you want to go see them? You haven't changed your mind?

He doesn't mean anything by it. He's just- He's normal, Luke. He looks at me and he sees choices. Why didn't I do something other than become a hooker? Why didn't I tell Alexander no? He doesn't understand. Maybe it's better that way. But it makes me feel like- It makes me feel dirty. How stupid is that? [...] No, listen to me. He's trying to figure out who killed Alexander too. I don't [...] He doesn't have bad intentions, but he's trying to connects dots, okay, and he thinks they start with me. [Disjointed] What if he told Sophie about Falcon instead of me? You don't think Crane would start trying to get information through her? Put things together?

Yeah. Yeah, you're right. I know you are. Gus deserves the best Christmas we can give him, and I think we could use a break too. [...] Okay. Good. I'd feel a lot better that way, and if it means you being around more, then it's an added bonus. [...] Of course I do. No, I haven't changed my mind. Not having you around makes me realize how much I do want you around.

[Cursor blink.] I know he's normal, and I know he doesn't understand. He tries, but that doesn't change the fact that he hasn't lived what you have, or what I have, and either way that doesn't give him the right to question your life like that. Who is he to judge? It's not stupid, Wren. But you're not dirty, and him not understanding what life is really like isn't your fault. [...] Then don't tell him anything. He can try to connect dots all he wants, but if we don't give him anything to go off of, he won't get anywhere. [Cursor blink.] Spencer isn't going to tell Sophie. He isn't going to tell anyone. Listen, you have to relax. Please. I'll take care of this. He's not a bad guy. He could've turned me in a hundred times, but he didn't. He probably just doesn't realize what he's doing.

You're really okay with it? [...] I can make an appointment for this weekend, if you want?

He's not a bad guy. I know. That's what makes it harder, actually. If he was a bad guy, I could just write him off as a jerk, but he isn't. He just doesn't understand our lives, that's all. And he wants to help Sophie, Luke. He sees her as a victim that can be controlled by Crane. We don't know what he'd tell her.

[After a long pause.] He said it was my fault. Well, not by name, but- You know. The Falcon thing.

I wish you were doing something else, but it's not the worst job in the world. As long as I know who your clients are, and you're safe, I'm okay with it. [...] Yeah. This weekend is good.

Maybe he should start trying to understand. Did he realize how stupid what he said was, at least? [Cursor blink.] Helping her and telling her about a murderous vigilante aren't the same thing, Wren. How does that help her at all? It doesn't. She needs to control Crane, and knowing about Falcon has nothing to do with that. Like I said, I'll talk to him. I just have to figure out how to approach it.

[Long cursor blink.] What did he say, exactly?

Okay and okay. I'll make an appointment for us.

I snapped at him. I think he understood that he pushed too hard. I hope so, anyway. I don't know, Luke. He isn't wrong, and everyone I meet is going to react the same way. I need to just learn to be okay with and to not let it get to me. [...] I don't know how it helps her, but it came up with me, didn't it? He mentioned Adam too, without saying who he was, and the doctor we went to see.

[...] He said you were hurt by someone you cared about. That in Seattle you'd had people to keep you in check, but that after I left [...] He said he fixed you. Implied it, I think.

Okay. Just let me know what time and where.

Good. [...] Yeah, Wren, he is wrong. You don't have to justify what you did or why you did it, not to anyone, no matter what they think, and Alexander wasn't the kind of guy who cared whether or not a girl said yes or no. Being okay with it means they're not responsible for their own behavior, and that's not right. You're not the one who has to change. Other people are, if that's how they're going to react. [...] Well, everyone on the vigilante scene knew Adam. How exactly did Falcon come up, and what did he say about the doctor we went to see?

[...] Yeah, well, that's all true. I was hurt back then, and angry, and without anyone around, I stopped caring. That's not your fault. It's not even Thomas'. It's mine, Wren. [Incredulous cursor blink.] No. He didn't fix me.

[She texts the realtor.]

I know. I know. But that's a perfect world, Luke, and we don't live in one of those. We live in a world where a nice boy automatically assumes Alexander was my client, and that I didn't say no. [...] I know everyone knew Adam, but Spencer wasn't here then. He mentioned Nell too. It means he was keeping a close eye on Seattle. He's smart, but trusting, and that scares me. [...] I don't even remember how the doctor came up, but he did. I told him I knew him from the working girls, and that he was discreet. He mentioned getting hurt with a mugger, and helping Helena and Tim with something over here.

I think he has a superhero crush, Luke. He's not going to like me any better if he figures out I'm the one that drove you to it.

I know we don't live in a perfect world. Trust me, I know that, and I'm not stupid enough to think it's ever going to become perfect. But [...] things will always stay the same if we just accept fucked-up mindsets and don't try to change them. He shouldn't have assumed you didn't say no, and anyways, the issue isn't what you said-- it's what he did. That's what Spencer should have focused on, because nothing gives someone the right to do what Alexander did. [Cursor blink.] Okay. So he was keeping an eye on things in Seattle. That just means he's observant. [...] I think I know what he was talking about. Helping Helena and Tim, I mean. You remember that Tristan woman? The one who owned Gardens, who's in prison now?

[Long cursor blink.] I was hardly a superhero, and I don't think he does. He just tried to help, that's all. You didn't drive me to anything. It's a lot more complicated than that, and besides, it's really none of his business.

I know. I mean, maybe it was okay with me. Maybe my work made him think it was okay. But nothing can explain away MK. If Spencer had found MK first, and not me, he would have looked at it differently. I just [Cursor blink.] I think he's going to keep looking, Luke. I don't think he's going to give up until he finds out what happened to Alexander. I know you don't want to hear that, but I think it's true. [...] You don't think he's going to watch the apartment or something and put things together? You really don't think so? [...] Yes. That's why they were in such a hurry to hire someone, because she was gone.

[Frustrated cursor blink.] No, that's even worse. It doesn't matter what your job is, it doesn't make what happened okay. He, of all people, should realize that. [...] He'll have to give up eventually. You, me, and MK are the only ones here that know. I'm not going to say anything, you won't, and MK-- she won't either, right? I just don't get why it's such a big deal for him. [...] Watch the apartment? No, I don't. Why would he do that? What's he going to put together? [...] Right. Well, that was kind of us. I mean, we went digging around in the basement of Gardens, and we found a human heart, and we sent it to the cops. I would've told you, but it was while we were [...] I didn't know if you wanted to talk to me at the time.

I don't know why it's a big deal for him either, but it is. [...] I'm worried he'll put together that you're Falcon. If he sees you, would he know? [Long pause, blink, blink, blink.] Oh. No, don't apologize. You're not driving me crazy, and I'm glad you got in touch with me. I probably would've called if you didn't. [...] Okay. Good. Not that you told her you did it, which I wish you hadn't, but at least she won't say anything. The only thing I can think of is that he knew Alexander, or-- [Cursor blink as he stops speaking.] Or Nick. [...] He won't. I'll make sure he doesn't. He never saw my face, Wren, and he won't recognize my voice either. [...] Helena asked us for help. She's Bruce's kid, and Tristan would've killed more people if we hadn't done anything. All they needed was evidence. It was nothing, really. A one time thing.

It's not okay. Not if you're feeling guilty for something that's in the past. I've forgiven you for that, remember? And I wasn't the easiest person to get along with either.

[...] Are you okay with that, if she says yes? [Cursor blink.] While we're talking about seeing people, I saw Jack. Max was there, and he was upset, and I think I just made everything worse. I just-- I was worried, and Max said she'd get him there, and I wanted to see him for myself.

I should have at least waited until I wasn't upset. He was nice, and I wasn't expecting it. Usually, the people who react that way aren't very nice, and I can see it coming. [...] Nick? He mentioned a boy, a man, one that was going through a really hard time. I don't think he said his name, but they were a couple once, I think. Who's Nick? Am I forgetting? [...] Okay. Okay. I just don't want him telling the wrong person. He won't do anything. He likes you. He won't. But he can't tell anyone else, Luke. He can't. If you go to jail, I [The cursor just blinks here for awhile, and she doesn't finish the sentence.]

You know you can contact me whenever you want, Wren. Whether you're upset or happy or something in between. I'm always here for you. You know that, right? [...] Sometimes nice people can be hurtful without realizing it. They're naive, in a way. Spencer's like that. It's not an excuse, though. Are you sure you're okay? [...] Nick is Alexander's brother. Identical twin. Looks just like him. [...] I'll make sure he doesn't. Okay? I'm not going to jail. I promise.

[...] Do you mean that?

[Cursor blink.] No, you don't need to be. We can figure something out if you're not. Gus adores you, and he hasn't seen Iris in forever. You don't have anything to worry about. [...] He was just-- I was worried, and I told Max, and she got him to come to the hotel she's staying at. He didn't expect me to be there, and I think he felt-- cornered, even though that wasn't what we intended. I only wanted to talk, to make sure he was okay and didn't go off doing something impulsive. [Cursor blink.] I can't fix it, Wren. I can't change what happened. I don't know what to do. I don't know how to help.

I'd rather contact you for good things. Like the fact that the realtor can see us Saturday at noon. Do we want to bring Gus? [...] I know he's naive. He was talking about Christmas like someone who had wonderful ones. He's not a bad person. I'll be okay. He just hit too close to home, that's all. Sometimes I can almost start to forget what I am, especially lately. [...] Oh. If he's doing this for Nick, then [Quickly] you have to remember that you promised we'd say I did it. If it comes to it, it was me. I can't lose you and Gus. Okay? Promise. Just type it. Just promise.

[...] Not really, but it'll be okay by Saturday. I promise.

To Gus, I'm not really any different than Iris or Jack, Luke. I'm just someone you know, who lives at the apartment sometimes, and who takes care of him sometimes.

I know, but you'd want me to contact you even if I was upset, wouldn't you? That goes both ways. [Cursor blink.] You said he didn't do too well last time you took him to see places, right? Do you think he might be better this time, or we should wait to pick someplace, or narrow it down to just a couple, and show him then? [...] I know exactly what and who you are, Wren, and I wish you could see what I see. Maybe one day you will. I haven't given up hope. [Long, long pause.] What about me and Gus losing you?

[...] Okay, but I still don't like that he upset you.

I don't think that's true, but either way, it's going to change once we get our own place. Something permanent will be good for all of us. [Cursor blink.] Do you think we should tell him? That we're his parents?

Yes. You're turning it around on me. That isn't fair, Luke Henry. [Cursor blink as he thinks.] He didn't like the realtor, but this is a new one. She's young and blonde. I don't think she'll remind him of anyone. But I think maybe we should go first, and take him once we've picked. Let him pick his bedroom and stuff then, when it's quiet and safe? [...] You're sweet. Have I ever told you? [A sigh as she waits through the pause for the words to show up.] Gus has to come first, Luke.

[...] He didn't mean to.

[Carefully.] You've always said you thought he was too small.

[She knows what all that vacillating means.] How bad is it, Luke? Be honest. I've known Jack longer than I've known you, remember?

I think it's very fair, Wren Maheu. [...] Okay. Then we'll go first, and once we've picked a place, we can bring him. He'll like that, I think. My apartment was kind of already established before he came along. This time we can start fresh. Just no painting our bedroom pink, okay? [...] I think you might have, once or twice. [Cursor blink. Frown, not that she can see it.] I don't understand why one of us has to take the blame. There's no evidence. We can deny it. I know Gus has to come first, but [...] it's not easy for me, Wren, to agree to let you take the fall. I can't. You have to understand that I can't.

[...] Still. I don't like anyone who upsets you, even if it's me. Especially if it's me.

[Pause.] I know I have, but I don't know how long we're supposed to wait, and he might be angry we didn't tell him when he's older. I want to do it right, that's all.

[Cursor blink.] Sometimes I forget. [...] I don't know, and that's me being honest.

You're being a sneak, and I kind of love you for it. [...] What if both Gus and I agree on the pink bedroom? [A delay, as she tries to figure out how to make him see.] If it looks like denying it won't work, then it has to be me. I don't have custody, and I'd rather die than see Gus end up in the system, Luke. I couldn't live with losing you and having that happen to him. There wouldn't be anything left to live for anyway.

[...] It wasn't you. I messed things up when I left. It's just hard to hear it from someone else. You always soften it for me.

[Her own delay, as she decides how honest to be.] I think it'll be easier if he's small. Easier for him, not for us, maybe. He won't understand all of it, but it might make him feel safer. Even if we just tell him about you. Even if we leave me out of it.

Only kind of? [...] Then it'd be two on one, which would be really, really unfair. I bet I can get Gus to agree that a pink bedroom is a terrible idea. [Extended cursor blink.] If denying it doesn't work, then I'll do everything possible to make sure Gus is taken care of. I can promise that. But, I'll also do everything possible to keep you out of jail. I can't just turn my back on you, Wren.

[...] Sometimes it's me. I just don't want you dwelling on it, that's all. I don't want you leaving to be something we still talk about years and years later. It happened, neither of us can change it, so [...] let's focus on now instead.

[Thoughtful pause.] How are we going to say it? And no, Wren. If we're telling him about me, we're telling him about you too. It's both of us or nothing.

[...] I don't know that either.
