[Ian V, Loren C]
[Locked to Ian V]

Mr. Vasey, we ain't ever met, but I'm real sure Meredith's already gone telling you about me. My name's Julian Shoals, and I got a crystal clean record. Not even a parking ticket to my name. I seen you on these journals, so I know you're like us. Figure I should start by telling you Nathan Rothstein killed a girl before I got to Vegas. I know, on account of her Alter being in my head now.

She was found near the road, far outside of town, and they dragged her in to the ME's office recent, if you want to go corroborating what I'm saying. Might better concentrate on all the girls that man's killed and buried clear out in the middle of nowhere instead, though.

I tried to get your niece to quit flirting and engaging that man for months, but she wouldn't listen. She kept on playing with him, like he was some damn puppy she could taunt and catch on her lonesome. Man started following her, which I don't think's any real secret to you neither, intent on killing her. I tried to get her safe then too, but the girl insisted on being bait for the man. I got all our conversations over the past months, if you don't believe me.

Loren I intended to go on and trap him in this church long enough to get to calling the cops, but she kept on talking to him in there, kept on getting close to him when I told her to come right back out, and next thing I know he's attacking her and the church is flaming. I saw her go in, and then I saw that church catch fire, and I got two folks across the road saw the same damn thing. Saw me too, if you want to verify, and no one else anywhere around.

Guess my point is this: A bad man's gone, and if you want to arrest me, you go on. But I'd sure love not to hear from you again, and I'm sure you don't want nothing to do with me, and last I checked folks don't go to jail without something like proof. If we could just let this rest, it'd be real appreciated.

Real nice talking,
Jules

Stay away from the redheaded fool girl, and you're in the clear. No chatting. No typing. Nothing. - Jules

[His response is significantly delayed, as he does indeed corroborate what the information mentioned, as well as running a background check on one Nathan Rothstein.]

Mr. Shoals,

My niece has not mentioned you in the way I suspect you believe she has. I am aware that Meredith was being threatened by an unknown individual, and I am also aware that she handled the situation poorly. I did my best to ensure that she was kept safe, though perhaps I could have done more. Regardless, she has learned from her mistakes, and all I know is that she was quite upset after I retrieved her from the church. She has said nothing else to me of what transpired but she did mention Loren, and I see you have not.

I will indeed verify your story, as you expect, but I do not particularly need to see your conversations. I understand enough of what happened, and I know my niece as well. [...] You know as well as I do that there is nothing for me to arrest you for. Not yet That fire did not start itself Therefore, I will be doing no such thing.

There is, however, something I would like both you and Loren to do, and that is to leave my niece alone. From this moment on, do not speak to her. Do not attempt to contact her in any way. Do not approach her on the street, or go near her elsewhere. I trust you will pass on the message, and if not, I will be more than happy to speak to him myself. I am a reasonable man, Mr. Shoals, but when it comes to Meredith, you will find that I am also not the sort of man you want to cross.

- Ian Vasey

I cannot allow a crime to go unpunished Good. I'm glad we could come to an understanding.

[Loren gets the note on his way back from the corner store. After reading it, he crumples it up with his good hand and considers tossing it into the trash.. but at the last moment, he spreads the note out on the kitchenette counter. He smoothes it with the side of his palm and magnets it to front of his fridge. For no reason at all. Just a reminder, he says to the empty room.]
