You like to contradict yourself. We can't be books, because we have souls, and characters don't, but your character in your head does, but that's because the soul is a thing of action, of connection. I argue every story worth reading has a soul, and imagination can save a person from unspeakable realities - that's valuable. Maybe not to you, but to whoever is doing the imagining.
