[The manila envelope is delivered via local courier two days after the night at the hotel. Signature is required upon delivery, and the courier waits patiently for it before leaving. Inside the envelope are two sheets of paper clipped together and another envelope, this one smaller, orange, and with "Gus" written on the outside. Inside the orange envelope is a card - A brightly colored cartoon dinosaur wearing a baseball cap, and on the inside it says "You're DINO-riffic!" It's signed with a smile and Iris' name printed very clearly and carefully at the bottom.
The letter has quite the different tone. It's been typed on a high quality paper stock, blank, but the watermark when held up to the light is for the Mandarin Oriental Hotel in Las Vegas.]
Dear Luke,
I realize that this leaves you with no forewarning, but after the events of the past week, I feel that I must resign my employment as Gus' caretaker. I have become ill-suited for the job, and at this point I fear that I would do more harm than good as his nanny.
I've done some research into local childcare providers, and there are several that seem to come highly recommended. As they also come highly priced, and since I have left you in this situation without warning, I am enclosing a check to help defray the cost of care. I am not accustomed to resolving things by throwing money at a situation, but I hope that in this instance it is able to help you.
Sincerely,
Iris Russell
p.s. I leave it to your judgement whether or not to give the card to Gus.
[The post script is hand-written at the bottom in the same penmanship from the journals, a little larger than most people's and carefully formed. Clipped to the letter is indeed a check, into 6 figures, and far more than needed to pay for childcare, even for several years. It's drawn off of a Morgenstern account, and her signature at the bottom reflects that name.]
[Locked to Wren, written very carefully.]
Wren,
I am not certain your level of interaction with your alter, but I wanted to reassure you that after this past week I am no longer Gus' caretaker. Due to the extreme lack of notice, I have provided Luke with compensation to find someone new. You may want to speak with him regarding your wishes and requirements in the next caretaker. In addition, if you require any legal counsel going forward, please contact [High-priced lawfirm]. They have been notified to provide you representation free of cost.
Sincerely,
Iris
