Who: Steve and Peggy
What: A phone call
Where: Steve's in District 8
When: After a series of things I will link to later
Steve owed Peggy a call.
He'd had a plan for after their date, and the plan had been to call Peggy as soon as he returned to Eight to let her know what a great time he'd had, and that he wanted to do it again. Too much waiting had been a common theme in their relationship, and Steve didn't intend to pass up any more opportunities. But he'd been back in Eight for a handful of days now, and the call still hadn't been made.
Every time he considered it, Natasha's words rang in his ears: I highly doubt you've ever sat down with Peggy Carter and asked her if she's okay with rotting in an early grave, all because you happen to make it incredibly obvious that you think she's pretty.
The worst of it was that Natasha wasn't wrong, and that knowledge had made it impossible to pick up the phone. But Peggy deserved better than that, and so even though it was horribly belated, Steve finally made himself sit down after dinner one night and make the damn call.
He wasn't entirely sure what he was going to say when she answered, and he still hadn't quite figured it out when she picked up and said hello.
"Peggy, hi," Steve said, voice soft with apology. "I - I'm sorry this is so... I meant to call sooner."
