WHO: Cai Vane and Lucius Malfoy
WHAT: Nice chats and Tinworth discussions
WHEN: December 15
WHERE: Cai's flat, Tinworth
Cai wasn’t expecting any guests, but now he lived in Tinworth he was always prepared for Gwen or Angelina to stop by unannounced just because they were too lazy to find their own dinner (the latter) or wanted to con someone into watching some new horror movie with them (the former). His friendly smile dropped suddenly when the door opened to reveal Lucius Malfoy instead. He was tempted to shut the door again right there, but Malfoy had rung the doorbell. That didn’t scream Death Eater attack, so maybe he was there on Ministry business. Still, he reached his arm still obscured by the half-open door into his pocket for his wand. “Can I help you?” It took a moment for Lucius to remember the man's name. He was a Hitwizard, he recalled, and he was the brother of one of Narcissa's journalists, the one she had trouble with. He could rely on that detail alone. "Hello, Hitwizard Vane. How are you today? Busy?" “A little,” Cai lied. “Are you lost?” "Oh, no," Lucius said pleasantly, tapping his fingers against the door. "I'm thinking about acquiring some real estate in Tinworth. I figured I should take a look around the area. How are you liking it?" Cai raised an eyebrow but answered politely nonetheless. He wasn’t about to provoke a known Death Eater. “I don’t know if it would suit you, Sir. I don’t think it would be the most valuable place.” "I like to expand my horizons." It was a very good thing that the assignment didn't require the actual purchase of property in Tinworth. He didn't want to invest his money in a place that would certainly be flattened the next time the Dark Lord thought it needed another lesson (which, if the pattern stood, would probably happen the day after he closed the sale). "But never mind about me. What are your thoughts about the place? Does it need some improvement?" “Less evil plants, werewolves and giants,” Cai listed some of the more recent Tinworth issues he could remember. “Are you going to do something to stop those things?” Lucius waved a hand. "I'm quite busy at the Ministry these days," he said, as if his working days consisted of more than signing a few papers and then heading home. "But I believe Hugo Nott is the man to talk to about that." “Riiight,”Cai drew out the word, giving himself time to think before he continued speaking, forehead crinkling in confusion. “You’re just surveying residents then?” "I suppose you could say that. You know, I'm quite inspired by Mr. Nott's candidacy. Are you?" “I’m more of a Robards man myself,” Cai answered honestly, realising immediately that this was likely a mistake. “But I’m sure it whoever wins will only act in the best interest of Tinworth,” he added hurriedly. Had Vane actually been for Nott, the Dark Lord would not have sent him on this task, so Lucius hadn't been surprised. It did, however, prolong his visit. "Your loyalty is admirable, but I fear," he paused, "misplaced. I'm sure you know Hugo is the man for the job, and I would hate for you to make the wrong decision for something so important." “I’m sure I’ll make the right decision, but thank you for your concern.” Cai stepped back slightly from the door, preparing to close both it and the conversation. Lucius was quicker, edging his foot into the doorway and a hand on the door to stop its movement. "Hitwizard Vane. I'm saying this out of concern. It is in your very best interest to support Hugo Nott." “Actually, I think Auror Robards better represents my interests,” Cai replied, gripping his wand tighter in frustration. “So if that’s all, I am busy.” It was frustrating that Vane didn't understand that the best thing to do was to agree with Lucius. He had shown up peacefully, approached the topic civilly, and had intended on keeping the interaction simple. But his refusal to understand unfortunately, for the both of them, complicated things. "It isn't," he said, as he pushed the door open so that he didn't have to stand there with his foot in the doorway. "I'd like to talk to you about your sister." With the barrier of the door now gone, Cai instinctively crossed his arms. “My sister?” "The journalist. She's gotten into some trouble, hasn't she?" He didn't wait for an answer. "I think if we all want to carry on with our lives without any… trouble, the two of you would do well to make better decisions." Lucius leveled a stare at him. Cai considered himself a patient man, but threats to his family, no matter how vague, were where he drew the line. “If you want to carry on your life without any trouble you should stay away from my sister,” he said, voice calm despite his increased heart rate. “Now, if you don’t mind.” He pushed the door shut with considerable force, the sound of it slamming in Lucius’ face satisfyingly reverberating through the apartment. The door slammed too fast for Lucius to react in time to stop it; one moment, he was pushing back, and the next, he was stumbling away from the door. Immediately, he started towards the door and then stopped himself. No, he decided. Vane would understand what it meant to ignore his warnings. Still, as Lucius walked away, he wasn't going to let him have the last word. A second and a Blasting Curse aimed at Vane's door later, Lucius felt much better about the whole conversation. |
