WHO: Evelyn Mulciber and Remus Lupin
WHEN: Today
WHERE: Evelyn's secret werewolf torture chamber. It's very posh.
SUMMARY: She makes a calculated decision.
WARNINGS: General Death Eater mindfuckery and ugliness.
By now, Evelyn knew it was fruitless. Remus Lupin didn't know where Harry Potter was. It was disappointing, if perhaps not surprising. She'd used up enough of the tricks in her book to feel confident in that assessment, but she was determined not to let this whole endeavour be a waste. This time, there was no patient waiting, no quiet moments or calm before the storm. This time, she burst into his small room and stood before him. "Get up," she said. (After nearly a fortnight, it would not be an easy command to follow.) And Remus, who had been drowsing with his head pressed to the side of the dank wall, did not manage much beyond a slow blink of comprehension at Evelyn’s very sudden appearance. Cramped and left to his own devices, only taking enough food so as not to die (a bite here or there, a drink to ensure a lack of poison), Remus was not prepared to comply to such a quick and sudden command. In fact, he stared at Evelyn rather dumbfounded for several moments before he made to get up slowly, inching along the wall with his shoulder. "Congratulations," she said dryly. "You're getting out of here today." “Hag,” he said, and straightened as best as he could. She had done nothing but lie to him and twist his mind into a thousand directions. He didn’t half know the truth on the best day. But he did know that Evelyn was bad and wrong. “Why do you persist in lying to me?” "You know, I'd think someone like you would have an aversion to species-based insults," Evelyn quipped, "But maybe it's your true self finally coming out. And I'm not lying to you. I'm just about done with you. It might be your last day on earth, but that will depend on how well you do." Remus was out of clever dialogue or good humour. His brow furrowed as she spoke and he gave her an encouraging nod. “ … so I had thought every day would be when you brought me here. And?” "And you're not telling me what I need, so instead you're going to show me." She wove a petrifying spell around him so he wouldn't be able to move. In her gloved hand, he held up a small bit of metal so he could see it. "I can't say I give Muggles credit for much," she said, "But one interesting thing they do is use these little chips to keep track of their pets. Now don't mind this, Lupin, it'll only pinch a bit." With surgical precision, Evelyn cut a slit into his upper arm and gently placed the chip inside. She healed it back up just as quickly; he didn't have much blood left to lose, anyway. Tired nerves well beyond their ability to feel deeply protested at Evelyn’s actions and Remus, whose eyes could only widen in pain and anger, stood still. As her petrifying curse wore itself down, he moved his lips experimentally and took a shallow breath. “A home again chip. All right.” "Now, then. I'd say you've got about eighteen hours," Evelyn said, miming to check her watch. "It normally takes closer to twenty-four, but in your condition..." She tsked and shook her head. "Well, I wouldn't risk it if I were you. I'll give you a couple of choices. You're going to lead me to Harry Potter himself, or you're going to lead me to the Order of the Phoenix's headquarters." “You’re really quite desperate, aren’t you?” was his very obvious reply. “Quite desperate to think I don’t know my life isn’t worth giving Harry up to you and yours.” But there was that itch again; the niggle in the back of his mind which must have been some version of the hell both James and Lily felt. He didn’t want to leave Tonks and their baby behind. “So it will kill me, will it?” "Well," Evelyn said, "The poison it's laced with will, anyway. I do have an antidote for you if you earn it. Some people are quite keen to make sure you don't ever see the sunlight again, but to be honest, I don't begrudge you the chance to see your wife again. Or to get smart and live to see even more." Shoulders sinking, he nodded assent to her words. “Then turn me loose, Evelyn.” Evelyn gave a curt nod. "Don't disappoint me, werewolf." |
