WHO: Vic Mulciber, Callum Corner, NPC Head of Floo
WHAT: Someone opened an unauthorized floo in the DMLE
WHERE: Floo Authority offices
WHEN: 19 October, morning
There was nothing like having one’s mother take the villainous wind out of one’s sails by Imperiusing the coworker you’d invested the time and false sincerity into framing. The job had been done, skilfully, precisely, as everything Evelyn Mulciber did, and Vic could even admit that her mother’s expert hand at mind magic ensured a seamlessness in Callum Corner’s belief of what he’d done for love of his children that Vic would not have been able to replicate. But Vic didn't need to, her Imperius was just fine and it was her mother’s lack of trust in her middle child’s abilities that infuriated Vic most. This was her plan. ’Perhaps you could spend some time training with Rosamund.’ “Sir, I need to speak with you." In the few seconds it took for her boss to acknowledge her, Vic caught sight of her glower in the mirror on the wall and relaxed it into an appropriate, non-homicidal frown. Of urgency. “Mulciber,” he didn't even look up from pruning his stupid shrubbery. “Whatever it is, I doubt we need the report you’ve no doubt written for it.” Vic’s jaw ticked. “Sir, an unauthorized floo was opened in the DMLE.” Errol Hargreaves dropped his wand, the plant wailing as a branch was sheared off. “What the fuck did you just say?” “A breach in the DMLE. I caught it before it was used sir, but --” “That’s impossible, how -- who?” Vic checked her irritation at being interrupted. “Corner, sir,” she said quietly. The head of Floo Authority seemed stunned, flummoxed, and Vic could see the dedicated years of Callum Corner’s service to the Department flash before his eyes. When Hargreaves’ mouth tightened, expression suddenly grim, Vic knew he’d arrived at Corner’s questionable behaviour the past few weeks. Hargreaves stood. “It’s closed?” Vic inclined her chin. No, but he'd never find out. “I just closed it myself, sir, brought Perkins with me to make sure. It was in the bloody breakroom. Yaxley has been alerted.” “Merlin fuck,” he said distractedly, writing furiously, likely to the Head of Transportation and DMLE before his quill was tossed to the side and he was coming around the desk. Through the window, both had a perfect view of Callum Corner, sitting at his desk, head down but visibly tense. The man flinched when a colleague called his name. Her mother had done a good job. “He was worried about his family,” Vic offered, feeding the lie. “And you saw how he’s been lately. And after the werewolves? His daughter?” Vic sucked in a breath. “He stayed later than me last night,” no one ever did that, “like he was waiting for me to leave. I was suspicious.” Hargreaves inhaled deeply, jaw clenched. “You did well Mulciber, a breach like that and in the DMLE no less? Good work. Stay here, DMLE and Transportation need a full account. CORNER!” Vic stepped back, the distressed but resolute expression on her face sliding off into a pleased smile. A breach like that could have been dangerous, at the very least an embarrassment. Thank Merlin for Victoria Mulciber, dedicated employee of the Ministry, one the Head of Floo Authority could count on to keep the Department safe. The perfect candidate for the vacant Deputy Head position. Callum Corner had provided the Death Eaters with another ear and access point to the DMLE, and he would be her stepping stone to the promotion she deserved. A helpful colleague to the very end. If there was any measure of guilt in that, Vic buried it deep. This was about looking out for yourself. Like always, when the things she deserved were not given to her, the things she worked hard for, she took them. She’d take Deputy Head of the Floo Network Authority too. |
